Technology Readiness Levels TRL (Technology Readiness Level)
TRL1 - Basic principles observed
Fundamental scientific research is transformed into potential new basic principles that can be used in new technologies.
TRL2 - Technology concept formulated
Identification of potential applications of basic (technological) principles, including technological solutions. Basic production principles are also studied and possible markets are identified. A small research group is formed to assess the technical feasibility of the project.
TRL3 - Experimental proof of concept
Based on previous study, actual research is conducted to assess the technical and market feasibility of the concept. This includes active R&D activities at the laboratory level and initial negotiations with potential clients. The research group continues to expand and a preliminary market effectiveness assessment is performed.
TRL4 - Technology validated in lab
Integration of key technological components for preliminary performance evaluation through laboratory testing. Active research on production possibilities is conducted alongside defining main production principles. Leading markets are checked to determine demand. The organization is ready to enter the expansion phase, conducting analysis of possible services and a full market analysis.
TRL5 - Technology validated in relevant environment
The system is tested in a user’s operational environment using a broader technological infrastructure. Actual use is tested and confirmed. Preparatory procedures and trials for production launch are conducted in laboratory conditions; trial pilot products may be introduced to main markets. Initial steps for further pilot product distribution and market entry are undertaken within the organization.
TRL6 - Prototype system demonstrated in operational environment
At this stage, the product and production technology are fully ready for launch on a pilot line or experimental industrial enterprise (low-level production). Product and production technology evaluation and refinement are carried out, including additional R&D activities. The product and production technology are tested in leading markets alongside operational production organization (including marketing, logistics, manufacturing, etc.).
TRL7 - Pilot production demonstrated at low level
Fully functional low-level product manufacturing, actual commercial product production. Final product testing in leading markets and practically completed organizational components (fully prepared market promotion schemes and fully organized remaining production activities). The product is officially launched on initial trial markets.
TRL8 - Actual system completed and qualified
At this stage, the product manufacturing schemes and final version are fully defined, and production organization and product promotion procedures are fully launched. Production is fully operational or the product is presented on most national and general markets.
TRL9 - Actual system proven in operational environment
Full production cycle launched, product distributed to new markets, minor product refinements create new versions. Technology and overall production volume are optimized through continuous implementation of innovative process ideas. The product is fully adapted to main markets.
Development Readiness Levels
IRL1 - Inventor or team with a dream
The lowest readiness level, when intention turns into an idea using space systems, or space technologies transform into a commercial initiative.
IRL2 - Research on paper
Once the main ideas are formulated, they are laid out on paper for study and analysis of commercial prospects.
IRL3 - Experimental confirmation of commercial prospects
Active research and development begins, including theoretical laboratory studies to confirm design properties in the market, competitiveness level, and technological solutions.
IRL4 - Capability for specialized program work with development team
Main technologies and business components are developed and checked for compatibility. An initial business plan is ready.
IRL5 - Capability for project support of design, development, and engineering (no product, no profit)
Main technologies and business components are combined with real support schemes. The business plan is realistic but requires confirmation considering the characteristics of the final product.
IRL6 - Capability to support development and engineering using market mechanisms (product exists, no profit)
Prototype system testing occurs in an appropriate environment. The business team is still incomplete and the idea is not ready for commercialization. A full business plan is ready, including marketing, management, technological, and financial aspects.
IRL7 - Capability to support limited production, business team fully staffed (product exists and limited profit)
The business can be launched in a limited format. The team is fully staffed.
IRL8 - Capability to transition to full-scale production and distribution (product and profit exist)
Technology operability is confirmed, and new production can support market expansion.
IRL9 - Fully built business with appropriate infrastructure and personnel (growing market)
Production processes use proposals including new technologies, and the business expands its markets.
