On May 12, 2026, the anniversary session of the General Assembly of the Department of Mechanics and Machine Science of the NAS of Ukraine dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Hydromechanics of the NAS of Ukraine took place in the Large Conference Hall of the NAS of Ukraine in Kyiv. The event was attended by the First Vice-President of the NAS of Ukraine, Chairman of the Section of Physical-Technical and Mathematical Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bogdanov, academician-secretary of the Department of Mechanics and Machine Science of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Nazarenko, heads of leading institutions and enterprises of the defense, aircraft manufacturing, and shipbuilding industries, members of the Academy from the Department of Mechanics and Machine Science, the Department of Mathematics, and the Department of Informatics, leadership and staff of the Institute of Hydromechanics of the NAS of Ukraine, representatives of other academic scientific institutions.
Academician-secretary of the Department of Mechanics and Machine Science of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Nazarenko, addressed the participants with an opening speech. He congratulated everyone on the significant date – the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Hydromechanics of the NAS of Ukraine. He recalled that established in 1926, this Institute made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian and world science, initiated new scientific directions, contributed to the establishment of Ukraine as a state with a strong scientific and technical potential, and made considerable efforts to develop its defense capability. Throughout its existence, the Institute has actively engaged in issues of natural and technical sciences, training highly qualified scientific personnel, and has achieved significant success in solving current problems related to meeting the needs of the state and society. The results obtained by the Institute's scientists have been recognized by the global scientific community and are applied in scientific institutions and enterprises of various sectors of our country's economy, including aircraft manufacturing, defense, shipbuilding, mining, energy, transport, and other industries. Today, the Institute continues to work actively, developing fundamental and applied research in the field of hydromechanics and hydraulic engineering, maintaining close ties with industrial enterprises, strengthening the scientific and technical potential of our State.
On behalf of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and personally from the President of the Academy, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Anatoliy Zahorodniy, the attendees, especially the scientists of the Institute of Hydromechanics of the NAS of Ukraine, were congratulated on the 100th anniversary of the Institute by the First Vice-President of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bogdanov.
"Over the time that has passed, the Institute of Hydromechanics has become one of the leading research centers of our country, a team that unites renowned scientists and highly qualified specialists, a hub where important fundamental research is conducted and experimental work is carried out," he noted. "The scientific community is well aware of the achievements of the Institute of Hydromechanics' staff in studying unsteady flows and channel processes, turbulent flow characteristics in the near-bottom region and near the free surface, development of heat transfer calculations to the atmosphere from the surface of cooling reservoirs, in the field of water filtration in hydraulic structures and large territories, hydrodynamics of moving objects, and hydroacoustics.
Important scientific directions have developed at the Institute, such as boundary layer control and hydro-bionics, hydrojet propulsion, supercavitation theory, high-speed movement of objects near boundaries, boundary layer receptivity, studies of wave and fluid flow interaction with elastic structures, computational hydromechanics, the results of which have found application in many industries and in the engineering practice of leading research and design organizations.
The present of the Institute is closely connected with a wide range of research on various aspects of fluid and gas flow acoustics and medical acoustics, high-speed hydromechanics and supercavitation, reduction of resistance to movement of bodies in water, hydrodynamic technologies, physico-chemical hydrodynamics, development of hydro- and pneumotransport, energy efficiency, water supply and drainage, hydraulic engineering, and land reclamation. Many studies are carried out on order from leading enterprises of our country, including the Joint Stock Company "Antonov" and the State Enterprise "Experimental Design Center for Shipbuilding."
During a recent visit to the Institute of Hydromechanics of the NAS of Ukraine, we were convinced that it truly has a unique experimental base. Its complex for hydrodynamic research is included in the State Register of scientific objects that constitute national heritage.
Examples of the Institute’s international scientific cooperation include the creation, together with the Royal Institute of Technology of Sweden, of a training research laboratory "Energy Technologies for Sustainable Society Development" and the establishment of the pilot ERCOFTAC center from Ukraine, which includes representatives from several scientific institutions and higher education establishments.
The development of modern Naval Forces and their replenishment through the construction of new modern types of ships is a matter of national importance. The research developed at the Institute of Hydromechanics on the study of flow patterns around moving objects, static stability of vessels, hydrodynamic theory of ship motion, theory of underwater wings, aero- and hydrodynamics of high-speed vessels with dynamic lift principles significantly contributes to solving these tasks. Your team has participated in the development of projects for the missile corvette "Mustang" and the small missile boat "Bogomol." Other promising developments of the Institute aimed at enhancing the defense capability of our country are also underway.
I am confident that the team of the Institute will honorably overcome the turbulent times of today and in the future will achieve many outstanding results that will contribute to strengthening the defense capability of our state, its restoration, and prosperity.

Afterwards, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bogdanov presented awards with which the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine honored the employees of the Institute of Hydromechanics of the NAS of Ukraine for many years of fruitful work, high professional achievements, and significant contribution to the development of scientific research and the creation of new technologies in the field of hydromechanics of water jets and hydraulic engineering, as well as on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Institute's founding.
The NAS of Ukraine award "For Training Scientific Personnel" was received by:
- Director of the Institute of Hydromechanics of the NAS of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Hennadiy Voropaiev;
- Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Institute, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Nataliya Horodetska;
- Head of the Research Laboratory, Doctor of Technical Sciences Viktor Boiko.
The NAS of Ukraine award "For Professional Achievements" was presented to:
- Leading Researcher, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Yaroslav Zahumenniy;
- Head of the Research Department, Doctor of Technical Sciences Volodymyr Voskoboynyk;
- Head of the Research Department, Candidate of Technical Sciences Volodymyr Moroz;
- Senior Researcher, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Valeriy Oliynyk.
The NAS of Ukraine award "Talent, Inspiration, Work" was presented to Senior Researcher, PhD Vladyslav Filonov.
The NAS of Ukraine expressed gratitude to the General Director of the Scientific and Production Enterprise "Intercyclone" Oleh Kravchenko.
The Honorary Diploma of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine and the Central Committee of the Trade Union of NAS of Ukraine Employees was awarded to Senior Researcher, Candidate of Technical Sciences Oleksandra Baskova.
