Scientists from the S.I. Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the NAS of Ukraine have joined the 30th seasonal Ukrainian Antarctic expedition. Geophysical research near the Ukrainian Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky" will be carried out by leading research fellow of the geomagnetism department, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Yuriy Sumaruk, leading research fellow of the department of deep Earth processes and gravimetry, Doctor of Geological Sciences Anton Kushnir, and the scientific secretary of the Institute, Candidate of Geological Sciences Volodymyr Ilyenko.
The purpose of these works is the implementation of the tasks and activities of the State Target Scientific and Technical Program for Research in Antarctica for 2011–2027, as well as the Seasonal Research Program within the framework of the 30th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition 2025–2026.
Under the leadership of Yuriy Sumaruk, long-term systematic monitoring observations of the geomagnetic field at the "Argentine Islands" magnetic observatory will continue, as well as research on the modern geodynamics of the Antarctic Peninsula based on the results of tectonomagnetic and magnetic variation monitoring near the Ukrainian Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky".
Anton Kushnir and Volodymyr Ilyenko will, for the first time near the Ukrainian Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky", measure the natural low-frequency electromagnetic field of the Earth using methods of magnetic variation profiling and magnetotelluric sounding. This will help obtain fundamentally new experimental data on the electrophysical properties of the Earth's crust and the deep structure of the region, where the measured electric field is formed as a result of induction processes within its thickness.
The research carried out by scientists of the S.I. Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the NAS of Ukraine is necessary for studying the geological structure and ice cover of West Antarctica, assessing its mineral resource potential, as well as for developing dynamic models of the environmental state under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors.
P.S. The mentioned works will be carried out with the assistance and support of the director of the National Antarctic Scientific Center, Candidate of Biological Sciences Yevhen Dykyi, and the deputy director for scientific work of the S.I. Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the NAS of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Olha Lehostaeva.
