With deep sorrow, we announce that Volodymyr Volodymyrovych Yehorov (born on January 10, 1975), Junior researcher at the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine, was killed on September 10, 2026 while defending Ukraine, its freedom and independence.
Volodymyr Yehorov worked at the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine since January 24, 2000. Over more than two decades of work, he proved to be a highly qualified specialist, responsible scientist, reliable colleague and comrade, sincere and kind person.
His research was related to the development and implementation of methods and installations for studying radiation environment parameters and physical modeling of biological protection.
A number of methods, instruments, and installations were developed with the participation of Volodymyr Yehorov, for measuring gamma radiation characteristics and radioactive contamination, including the ‘Ekran’ installation for physical modeling of shielding, a gamma spectrometer with a collimated detector, dosimeter-radiometers, and equipment for measuring surface beta-radioactive contamination with high gamma background.
The scientist participated in the preparation of safety analysis reports and environmental impact assessments as part of the project documentation for stabilizing the structural constructions of the ‘Shelter’ installation, the construction of a new ventilation pipe, and the containment perimeter of the New Safe Confinement. He also contributed to the implementation of other international projects for the transformation of the ‘Shelter’ installation within the framework of the Implementation Plan for measures at the ‘Shelter’ installation.
Volodymyr Yehorov was a co-author of patents for a method of determining and a device for measuring the angular distribution of the gamma radiation field, and was engaged in the development and application of probabilistic safety analysis methods. As a result of his research, he became the author and co-author of about 50 scientific publications in domestic and foreign journals.
In May 2022, Volodymyr Yehorov made a stand for Ukraine. In military service he remained responsible, courageous, and devoted to his cause.
On September 10, 2026, Volodymyr Yehorov was killed while defending Ukraine.
His death is a heavy loss for his family, friends, comrades, and the team of the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants of the NAS of Ukraine.
