The M.M. Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the NAS of Ukraine celebrated its 60th anniversary

On January 22, 2026, a Ceremonial Meeting was held at the M.M. Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the institution's founding. The large conference hall of the Institute in Kyiv gathered its staff and invited guests, including members of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, colleagues from Ukrainian and foreign scientific institutions. 

The Ceremonial Meeting was opened by the director of the M.M. Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Serhiy Perepelytsia. He introduced the guests of the event and delivered a report titled "M.M. Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: 60 Years of Scientific Progress", in which he acquainted those present with the history of the Institute's formation, the main milestones of its development, the most important achievements, its current state, and prospects.

On behalf of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute's team was congratulated by the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Anatoliy Zahorodniy. He noted the significant contribution of the institution to the scientific output of the Academy and its (the institution's) important role in the development of fundamental science in Ukraine – as one of the world's leading centers of theoretical physics – and also presented awards, certificates, and letters of appreciation to the Institute's staff.

With a congratulatory speech on behalf of the Section of Physical-Technical and Mathematical Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, its head, the first vice-president of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bohdanov spoke. Congratulations to the Institute's team were also expressed by the vice-president of the NAS of Ukraine, head of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Radchenko.

From the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the NAS of Ukraine, the participants of the Ceremonial Meeting were greeted by the academician-secretary of the Department, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Mykhailo Bondar, who also presented letters of appreciation from the Department to the Institute's staff.

Warm congratulations on the 60th anniversary were heard from colleagues from other scientific and educational centers of Ukraine and the world, including from the director of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yaroslav Yatskiv, professor at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA, Trieste, Italy) Carlo Baccigalupi, director of the I.R. Yukhnovsky Institute of Condensed Matter Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine Taras Bryk, deputy director for scientific work at the V.E. Several institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine sent congratulatory letters to the Institute and its team.

As part of the Ceremonial Meeting program, a ceremony was held to award diplomas to newly elected honorary doctors of the Institute – professor of the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden) Erik Aurell and chief research fellow of the Department of Soft Matter Theory at the I.R. Yukhnovsky Institute of Condensed Matter Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine Myroslav Holovko.

Both laureates delivered inaugural speeches. Professor Erik Aurell outlined the main stages of his scientific path and expressed support for Ukrainian scientists during this difficult time for Ukraine. Corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine Myroslav Holovko, in his speech, presented approaches to building a statistical theory of condensed matter, which he developed together with colleagues over many years, and also emphasized the close connection of the Lviv scientific school with the M.M. Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the NAS of Ukraine.

The Ceremonial Meeting concluded with the presentation of a film preview about the M.M. Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, prepared by the team of the popular science educational channel "Academ.Media" and the Institute's staff. The film is dedicated to the history of the institution's formation, its scientific traditions, and current research directions.
