“It seemed that the harsh frosty winters with snowdrifts, often recalled by the older generation, had long been a thing of the past. But the Asian anticyclone became a kind of time machine for Ukrainians. December was quite warm, although it snowed at the end of the month. However, January surprised with frosts – in some places the thermometer dropped to -25°C. A short-term warming was followed by even stronger frosts – at the beginning of February, temperatures of -30°C were recorded in some areas. And all this happens against the backdrop of news about climate change and temperature anti-records,” – it says at the beginning of a article in the pages of “Ukrainian Pravda. Life”.
The publication’s journalists spoke with the head of the Department of Applied Meteorology and Climatology of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Candidate of Geographical Sciences Vira Balabukh, to find out:
- the cause of the cold spell and when it might end;
- whether this winter is really anomalous;
- how frequent such cold periods are for our country;
- how this aligns with climate change;
- and what winters will be like in 20 years.
