How has the war affected the demographic situation in Ukraine and the average life expectancy of the population? Why is the Ukrainian nation rapidly aging and what economic and social consequences will this have? Increasing birth rates or migrants: what will save Ukraine's demography? Demography after the war: what will the country's population be like in the future? All this and much more was discussed in an interview for "RBC-Ukraine" by the Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the NAS of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, Oleksandr Gladun.

Regarding the current state of demography in the country, the scientist emphasized: "The situation is bad, but during the war it cannot be good, as birth rates are declining and mortality is increasing. Moreover, demography is affected by massive migration flows – both within the country and abroad.

According to our estimate, at the beginning of 2022, within the borders of Ukraine of 1991, there were 42 million people. At the beginning of 2025 – about 34 million. This includes Crimea, ORDLO, and occupied territories. We have now started work on new calculations and will soon adjust the estimates."
