On the current demographic situation in Ukraine and future forecasts: an interview by "TSN" with scientist-demographer, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Oleksandr Gladun

16.02.2026

The demographic situation in Ukraine remains consistently difficult. The war has only exacerbated the trends observed in previous decades: low birth rates, high mortality, and mass migration.

On this topic, journalists from "TSN.ua" spoke with Oleksandr Hladun, Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Mikhail Ptukha Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and a corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine.

What was the demographic situation in Ukraine in 2025, why is the birth rate declining, what are the risks of such a rapid population decline, what percentage of deaths can be attributed specifically to the war, what is the situation with migration, how did the permission for men aged 18 to 22 to travel abroad affect Ukraine's population, will Ukraine be able to bring its citizens back from abroad, what are the current chances and what conditions should be met for their return, and what are the demographic forecasts for Ukraine in the coming years – answers to these and other questions can be found in the full version of the interview.
