Interview with zoologist Vitaliy Smagol

10.11.2025

War leaves a mark not only in history but also in nature. Explosions, fires, infrastructure destruction, environmental pollution – all of this changes natural processes, in particular affecting animal behavior, forming new, often unpredictable ecosystems. Nature responds to war in its own way: some species disappear, others adapt, and some even occupy new natural niches.

How exactly does wildlife life change under war conditions? Why are more and more wild animals appearing in cities? How can scientists help Ukraine restore natural areas after the war? This is discussed in the new episode of the program "About Science. Competently," which is released on the YouTube channel of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The author and host of the program is the Vice President of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Seminozhenko.

The guest of the studio is the leading researcher of the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Biological Sciences Vitaliy Smagol.
