Interview with the scientist-botanist, corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, Dzhamal Rakhmetov

03.07.2026

What do a tiny seed and the future of a state have in common? At first glance — not much. But today, plants are becoming one of humanity’s most important strategic resources. They ensure food security, help restore the environment, create new sources of energy, and open up opportunities for economic development.

Most of us perceive the Botanical Garden as a place of beauty, relaxation, and inspiration. But behind the blooming magnolias, lilacs, and exotic collections lies great science — science that shapes the plant resources of the future. It is here that new crops for Ukraine are born, the genetic diversity of plants is preserved, and solutions for the challenges of the 21st century are created.

The new episode of the program "About Science. Competently," which airs on the YouTube channel of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, discusses how modern botanical science works for the country's future, why plants are becoming a factor of national security, and what role the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the NAS of Ukraine plays in this.

The guest of the studio is Djamal Rakhmetov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the M. M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the NAS of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, one of the leading Ukrainian scientists in the field of plant introduction, bioenergy, and innovative development of botanical science. The author and host of the program is the Vice President of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Volodymyr Semynozhenko.
