With deep sorrow, we announce that on January 25, 2026, at the age of 97, the outstanding scientist in the field of solid deformable body mechanics and mechanical system vibrations, Honored Scientist of Ukraine, laureate of the USSR State Prize in Science and Technology, the O.M. Dynnyk and H.S. Pysarenko Prizes of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine MATVYEEV Valentin Volodymyrovych passed away.
Valentin Volodymyrovych Matvyeev was born on November 10, 1929, in Trostianets, Sumy region. He graduated from the Kyiv Automobile and Road Institute and completed postgraduate studies at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. From 1956 to 1963, he taught at the Kyiv State Pedagogical Institute, Kyiv Higher Artillery Engineering School, and Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. From 1963 to 1966, he was a research worker in the strength sector of the Institute of Materials Science Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Since 1966, he worked at the G.S. Pysarenko Institute of Strength Problems of the NAS of Ukraine (1966-1975 – senior researcher, 1975-2006 – head of department, simultaneously from 1977 to 1988 – deputy director of the Institute for scientific work, from 2006 – chief researcher). Concurrently, he worked at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute as a department professor (1977-1983) and chairman of the State Examination Commission (1986-1991).
V.V. Matvyeev made a significant contribution to the development of domestic science by conducting extensive original theoretical and experimental research on pressing issues of nonlinear vibrations of dissipative mechanical systems and the strength of materials and structural elements under extreme cyclic loading conditions. His name is associated with the development of new methods for determining the characteristics of cyclic inelasticity of materials and damping of vibrations in nonlinear mechanical systems, methods for calculating forced vibrations of elastic bodies in the presence of fatigue damage and regular systems with broken symmetry, new variants of deformation and energy criteria, and methods of vibration diagnostics of fatigue damage in structural elements, as well as the development of new experimental tools for studying the damping capacity of materials and structural elements, one of which was awarded a Gold Medal at the International Leipzig Fair. In the mid-1970s, together with Academician H.S. Pysarenko, he initiated the development of research on vibrations of regular mechanical systems in the presence of frequency-dissipative heterogeneity of their identical elements, particularly systems with constructive cyclic or rotational symmetry. Under his leadership, the department closely cooperated and continues fruitful collaboration with leading enterprises in the field of aviation turbomachinery engineering in Ukraine, such as SE "Ivchenko-Progress" and PJSC "Motor Sich." Valentin Volodymyrovych obtained important results in studying the dissipative properties of materials and damping of vibrations of structural elements and improving their vibration reliability, which were notably used in comprehensive work on creating and implementing methods to enhance the vibration reliability of aircraft engines, recognized by the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology (1982).
Valentin Volodymyrovych served as deputy academic secretary of the Mechanics Division of the NAS of Ukraine (1983-2009), deputy chairman of the Commission on Space Research of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the Coordination Commission on General Machine Building Problems under the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine (1988-2000), member of the bureau and head of the scientific council section on the problem "Improving the reliability and durability of machines and structures" under the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1979-1984), member of the machine building and transport section of the Committee on State Prizes of Ukraine in Science and Technology (1982-2000), coordination council of the Ministry of Aviation Industry of the USSR and the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR on the program "Improving the reliability and durability of gas turbine engines" (1986-1990), member of the National Committee of Ukraine on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, scientific council on the problem "Mechanics of deformable solid bodies," and other scientific and scientific-technical commissions and councils of the NAS of Ukraine.
V.V. Matvyeev is the author of over 400 scientific works published in leading domestic and foreign journals, including 11 monographs and reference books, 31 inventions, and more than 200 articles.
The scientific community, colleagues, friends, and students sincerely mourn the death of Valentin Volodymyrovych and express their condolences to his family and loved ones.
The farewell will take place on January 27 from 11:00 to 12:00 in the Large Conference Hall of the NAS of Ukraine (55 Volodymyrska St., Kyiv).
