On December 8, 2025, a solemn ceremony was held at the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine to award the joint prizes of the presidents of the NAS of Ukraine and the Polish Academy of Sciences for 2024. The event was attended by the leadership of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and representatives of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Among the honored guests were the special advisor to the president of the Polish Academy of Sciences on cooperation with Ukraine, Professor Jerzy Duszyński, and the director of the PAS representative office in Kyiv, Mateusz Białas.
Welcoming the guests, the President of the NAS of Ukraine, academician Anatoliy Zahorodniy, emphasized the exceptional role of Professor Duszyński in building Ukrainian-Polish scientific cooperation, implementing support programs for Ukrainian scientists, and his personal solidarity with Ukraine from the first days of the full-scale war.
During the event, Professor Jerzy Duszyński was solemnly presented with the diploma of a foreign member of the NAS of Ukraine – in May 2025, he was elected as a foreign member of the Academy in the Department of Biochemistry, Physiology, and Molecular Biology.
The President of the NAS of Ukraine recalled that the joint prize of the presidents of the NAS of Ukraine and PAS was established in 2013 at the initiative of the Polish side as a tool to support effective bilateral research. In the third competition, the prize was awarded in three categories – socio-humanitarian sciences, biological and medical sciences, science and technology. The funding for the prizes in 2024 was fully provided by the Polish Academy of Sciences.
In turn, Professor Jerzy Duszyński noted the high level of joint research, the professionalism of Ukrainian scientists, and assured further comprehensive support for Ukraine from the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Next, the diploma awarding ceremony for the laureates began.
In the field of physical-technical and mathematical sciences, the winner was the joint Ukrainian-Polish project "Development of thermoplastic polymer nanocomposites with functional properties", implemented by the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the NAS of Ukraine and the Center for Polymer and Carbon Materials of the PAS. The prize laureates were academician of the NAS of Ukraine Ihor Krivtsun – head of the Ukrainian part of the research team, corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine Maksym Yurzenko, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Yevhen Mamunya, Doctor of Chemical Sciences Valeriy Demchenko, and Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Oleksiy Maruzhenko.
In the field of chemical and biological sciences, the prize was awarded to the project "The role of β-catenin and pyridoxal-5-phosphate in regulating heart development, function, and metabolism", carried out by the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the NAS of Ukraine, the O.O. Bohomolets Institute of Physiology of the NAS of Ukraine, and the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the PAS. The laureates were Doctor of Biological Sciences Oksana Piven – head of the Ukrainian part of the project, and Candidates of Biological Sciences Larysa Matsevych, Nataliya Strutynska, and Yulia Hoshovska.
In the field of social and humanitarian sciences, the winning project was "Antiquities of the Black Sea, archaeological mission 'Olbia'", implemented by the Institute of Archaeology of the NAS of Ukraine together with the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The prize laureate was corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine Alla Buiskykh.
After the awarding of diplomas, the project leaders and representatives of the research teams shared the results of joint research, experiences of international cooperation, and visions for the further prospects of Ukrainian-Polish scientific partnership.
In conclusion, the President of the NAS of Ukraine congratulated the laureates and wished them new scientific achievements, successful project implementation, and further strengthening of cooperation between the scientific communities of Ukraine and Poland.
