«Kharkiv Quantum Seminar» invites you to the next lecture, which will take place on January 20, 2026, at 17:00 online.
Lecturer: Aephraim Steinberg (Aephraim M. Steinberg), University of Toronto, Canada.
Lecture topic: «What did you do last nanosecond? Experimentally asking photons and atoms about their past».
Aephraim Steinberg is a professor at the University of Toronto and a founding member of the Centre for Quantum Information and Quantum Control. His research is devoted to open questions in fundamental quantum mechanical concepts and historical experiments, in particular determining the trajectories of photons passing through a double slit using weak measurements, as well as determining the tunneling time of particles through barriers.
He began his scientific career at Yale University, earned his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley in 1994, and has been working at the University of Toronto since 1996.
Professor Aephraim Steinberg is also known for popular science articles in Scientific American, Physics World, and participation in the documentary popular science series "Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman." He is a recipient of numerous international awards and honors for scientific achievements and science popularization.
Within this quantum seminar lecture, problems that quantum mechanics and optics specialists consider solved in every detail will be discussed, including questions of quantum tunneling and the passage of individual photons through a cloud of two-level atoms. Yet, if you look deeper and ask: "where are the atoms when they tunnel through the forbidden region, and how much time do they spend there?" or "how do photons slow down and where is their energy concentrated over time?" — the answers turn out to be not so simple. Professor Aephraim Steinberg's talk will be dedicated to these questions and their answers with references to relevant modern experiments.
