On January 30–31, 2026, the "Smart Materials" team from the G.V. Kurdyumov Institute of Metal Physics of the NAS of Ukraine participated in the "Act in Space 2026" hackathon.

The team worked on the challenge "Deploying Hope: Versatile Solutions for Earth and Beyond," proposed by CNES.

Today, up to 30% of satellite antennas fail to deploy in space, creating serious risks for space missions. The scientists' solution involves increasing the reliability of such systems through the use of innovative materials developed at the Institute, including high-entropy alloys with shape memory effect.

The hackathon was a real challenge: 24 hours of intensive work by scientists on a technical solution and a business model (Business Canvas) in collaboration with mentors from various fields and countries.

As a result, the "Smart Materials" team from the G.V. Kurdyumov Institute of Metal Physics of the NAS of Ukraine became the national winner of "Act in Space 2026."

Next up is the international final in France.
