"Towards quantum-enhanced sensing using spin defects in solids" – the topic of the next lecture of the "Kharkiv Quantum Seminar"

18.02.2026

«Kharkiv Quantum Seminar» invites you to the next lecture, which will take place on February 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM online.

Speaker: Paul Lee (Paul Junghyun Lee), Korea Institute of Science and Technology, Seoul (Korea Institute of Science and Technology, Seoul).

Lecture topic: «Towards quantum enhanced sensing using solid-state spin defects».

Dr. Junghyun (Paul) Lee has been working as a senior researcher at the Quantum Technology Center of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) since 2022. Prior to this position, he was a postdoctoral researcher at KIST, where he began his work on developing quantum technologies based on defect qubits. The scientist earned a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from the University of Chicago and a PhD in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His broad research interests include quantum information processing using defect qubits in solid-state materials, covering topics from materials science to device engineering.

The quantum seminar will be dedicated to new developments in quantum metrology with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. The impact of noise on a recently proposed post-selection protocol, which improves classical Fisher information during measurement, will be considered. It will be demonstrated how to model a dissipative channel using an isolated third energy level, and a fundamental scheme for post-selection quantum parameter estimation will be outlined. A proof-of-principle demonstration using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond will also be presented, and potential applications for enhancing sensitivity in magnetometry will be discussed.

Event organizers: B.I. Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the NAS of Ukraine (Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Serhii Shevchenko) and National Science Center "Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology" (Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Andrii Sotnikov).
