On the demographic losses of Ukraine during the war: an interview with scientist-demographer, corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, Oleksandr Hladun

26.12.2025

Four years of war for Ukraine have become not only a military but also a demographic challenge: a sharp decline in birth rates, mass migration, and unprecedented "aging" of the warring parties. Today it is extremely important to answer the question: how long will Ukraine withstand this burden?

On this topic, journalists from "TSN.ua" spoke with the Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Mikhail Ptukha Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, Oleksandr Gladun.

About which processes demographers call real losses, why the decision for young people aged 18–22 to leave is strategically negative, whether it is worth hoping for the return of at least a third of our citizens from abroad, and which places in Ukraine may become depopulated in an interview "Demographic bomb: why the war in Ukraine will last longer than the 'domestic' one and only 30% of migrants will return".
