Academy scientists gave an interview for the spring issue of “ELLE Ukraine” magazine, dedicated to the topic of artificial intelligence.

Recently, the women's magazine ELLE Ukraine” presented an issue dedicated to the topic of artificial intelligence.

As noted at the beginning of the issue, artificial intelligence (AI) is a rather sensitive area for humanity. The term was first used in 1956 by American John McCarthy: he described a branch of computer science aimed at equipping machines with human abilities. Controversial and heated debates about the risks of this technology have been ongoing for many years.

Today, Ukrainians already use AI in medicine, the film industry, gaming, education, and on the front lines. Currently, many scientists in various research institutions in Ukraine are working on AI. Several dozen companies developing AI models are registered in Ukraine. In addition to all the above, scientific parks are emerging in our country, including “Academ.City” based on the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. This park, a kind of analogue to Silicon Valley, created under the influence of the Adlershof science park in Berlin, has the ambitious goal of pushing knowledge-intensive industries (AI, biotechnology, green energy) to become the levers that will allow Ukraine to build an innovative knowledge-based economy. The initiative to establish “Academ.City” was launched and is headed by the well-known Ukrainian mathematician, chair of the Scientific Committee of the National Council of Ukraine on Science and Technology, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Oleksandra Antonyuk.

What is artificial intelligence? How to live with it today and tomorrow – to join in or keep a safe distance? “ELLE” invited six Ukrainian female scientists to reflect on these and other questions, as well as to talk about their current scientific work, which they continue to develop despite all the harsh challenges of today.

In particular, the magazine interviewed:

  • Junior Researcher at the Systems Biology Laboratory of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the NAS of Ukraine, expert at the “Academ.City” science park, Alina Frolova;
  • Senior Researcher at the Institute of Cell Biology of the NAS of Ukraine, laureate of the fifth season of the Ukrainian L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science” award, Candidate of Chemical Sciences Natalia Stasiuk;
  • Senior Researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Yevhenia Semenova
