Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yakiv Didukh on the future of the Kakhovka Reservoir

30.09.2025

In an interview with ZN.ua, head of the Department of Geobotany and Ecology of the M.H. Kholodny Institute of Botany of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yakiv Didukh spoke about the results of observations at the site of the former Kakhovka reservoir after the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP dam.

He noted that active processes of natural regeneration have been recorded for several weeks after the disaster: the formation of habitats of coastal-aquatic vegetation (cattail, sedge, reed), thickets of willows and poplars, as well as the settlement of the area by birds and fish, including sturgeon.

However, the scientist warns that the new ecosystems will not restore the former state of nature – they may be affected by "alien" species, disruptions of the hydrological balance, and climate changes.

The scientist emphasizes that for the full restoration of the affected areas, careful monitoring, scientifically justified intervention, and ecological programs are necessary, which will take into account ecosystem services – in particular, the role of poplar-willow forests in moistening, enriching soils, and protecting biodiversity.

He also notes that any decision regarding the possible restoration of the reservoir must consider economic feasibility and environmental risks to avoid new losses for nature and society.
