At the Publishing House "Akademperiodyka" of the NAS of Ukraine, under the project "Scientific Book," a collective monograph "Shevchenko Studies at the T. H. Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the NAS of Ukraine: Stages of Development (1926–2026)" has been published, which is a profound historical-literary review demonstrating the continuity of the Ukrainian academic tradition.
The work highlights the thorny history of academic Shevchenko studies. The authors explore its origins from the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the Taras Shevchenko Institute (founded in 1926), which after a series of reorganizations in 1933 became part of the Academy of Sciences. The evolution, key achievements, and tragic losses of Shevchenko studies from the 20th century to the present are thoroughly analyzed.
The first chapter presents the tragic period of 1926–1936, when after the creation of the Institute, Stalinist repressions began, leading to the gradual destruction of scientific personnel. The authors examine the history of the emergence and prohibition of the unfinished "Complete Works of Shevchenko," as well as the contributions of repressed and forgotten scholars. The following chapters describe the Institute's work from the late 1930s until the end of World War II, including the publication of the academic Shevchenko collections of 1939 and 1944.
A significant part of the work is devoted to the post-war development of the science: ideological challenges and censorship restrictions faced by scholars in 1945–1949, the main directions of Shevchenko studies in the 1950s. The relative thaw and revival of research in the 1960s are described, as well as the patterns of development of Shevchenko studies in the 1970s, including the circumstances of the appearance of the fundamental works "Shevchenko Studies: Results and Problems" and the "Shevchenko Dictionary."
The achievements of academic science in the 1980s are also highlighted, including personal creative portraits of prominent researchers: Yevhen Kyrylyuk, Yuriy Ivakin, and Vasyl Shubravskyi. A separate chapter is devoted to the 1990s: concepts and trends in Shevchenko studies during the first decade of Ukraine's Independence, when liberation from Soviet ideological dogmas occurred. The final chapter (from the turn of the century to the present) focuses on the modern stage of institutional science. It discusses such a large-scale project as the six-volume "Shevchenko Encyclopedia." The publication concludes with materials for the bibliography of Shevchenko studies publications by scholars of the Institute of Literature.
The edition is intended for scholars, teachers, philology students, and all those interested in the history of Shevchenko studies.
