A collective monograph "Historical and Cultural Heritage of Ukraine during the Russian-Ukrainian War" has been published at the M.T. Rylsky Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It became the main summary of the research work "Cultural Heritage of Ukraine: Research, Its State in the Period of Contemporary Challenges," carried out at this institution during 2023–2025.
The work emphasizes that Ukrainian artistic culture has fought with titanic efforts over centuries for its right to establish and preserve its own national identity. Many cultural heritage monuments of the independent Ukrainian state have global significance and belong to the UNESCO World Heritage. However, currently Ukrainian cities, including those where the oldest examples of human artistic culture are preserved, are subjected to barbaric shelling by the Russian army and are under threat of destruction. The book discusses the destroyed and damaged cultural monuments in Kharkiv, Sumy, Odesa, Kyiv, Donetsk, Chernihiv regions due to the war, and also addresses the issue of their restoration and conservation.
The publication contains many illustrations of destroyed and damaged Ukrainian monuments.
The authors of the monograph are researchers of the Department of Fine and Decorative-Applied Arts of the M.T. Rylsky Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine:
- Head of the department, Doctor of Art Studies, Academician of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine Tetyana Kara-Vasylieva;
- Postgraduate student Yevheniy Kuzmenko;
- Senior Researcher, Candidate of Art Studies Zoya Chehusova.
The chief editor of the book was the Acting Director of the M.T. Rylsky Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Candidate of Historical Sciences Nataliya Stishova.
The layout and cover of the publication were designed by the artist Olena Mykholat.
The book was exhibited at the exhibition-presentation of research and developments of the NAS of Ukraine institutions on the occasion of Science Day in Ukraine, held on May 14–15, 2026, in Kyiv.
