Meeting of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine on June 10, 2026: prospects of Ukrainian literary studies and innovative electromechanical systems

On June 10, 2026, a regular meeting of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine was held under the chairmanship of Anatoly Zagorodny, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, President of the NAS of Ukraine. 

The meeting began with the solemn ceremony of presenting state awards of Ukraine, awarded by Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 380/2026 on the occasion of the Science Day. Valery Husynin, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Chief research fellow of the M.M. Bogolyubov Institute of Theoretical Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, and Arkady Chykriy, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, head of the department at the V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics of the NAS of Ukraine were awarded the honorary title "Honored Master of Sciences and Engineering of Ukraine" for a significant personal contribution to the development of national science, strengthening the scientific and technical potential of Ukraine under martial law, many years of diligent work and high professionalism. The President of the Academy congratulated the awardees and wished them further success.

The next item of the agenda was the signing of the Agreement on Scientific and Technical Cooperation between the Academy and the State Agency for Infrastructure Restoration and Development of Ukraine. Its purpose is to provide scientific support for the Agency's activities and coordinate fundamental and applied scientific research and scientific and technical developments aimed at the restoration, modernization, stable functioning and innovative post-war development of the energy sector of Ukraine.

Anatoly Zagorodny, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, President of the NAS of Ukraine, and Serhiy Sukhomlyn, Head of the State Agency for Infrastructure Restoration and Development of Ukraine signed the Agreement.

"This is a strategic step aimed at uniting the efforts of academic science and the state executive institutions in order to address the most pressing challenges of today and the post-war revival of our state. 

The war caused large-scale destruction to the Ukrainian infrastructure, energy system, and residential and industrial complexes. Our common task is to build a new, modernized, sustainable and technologically independent state. The leading role in this process should belong to science-based solutions", Anatoly Zagorodny noted

Next, the meeting participants listened to two scientific reports.

In 2026, the 100th anniversary of the T.G. Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the NAS of Ukraine will be celebrated, which played an exceptional role in the development of Ukrainian literary studies. Mykola Zhulynsky, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Director of the Institute spoke about the history of Ukrainian literary studies and prospects for their development.

The speaker noted that academic literary studies, and therefore the history of the Institute, dates back to the founding of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute originated from the Historical and Philological Department of the UAS in 1918. Officially, the Taras Shevchenko Institute as a research institution was established in early 1926. From the first months of the Institute's existence, the formation of a scientific library began, and the creation of a literary and memorial collection was also initiated, that is, separate personal archival funds, which included manuscripts, lifetime and rare editions of Shevchenko's works, his artistic works and even memorial items. At the same time, personal funds of P.O. Kulish, Hanna Barvinok, I.S. Nechuy-Levytsky and other writers were created, which gave the possibility to publish the works of Ukrainian literature classics.

Since its founding, the Taras Shevchenko Institute has been conducting a purposeful and systematic accumulation of the appropriate base - manuscript and book collections - as a necessary prerequisite for the deployment of a broad program of scientific research and the publication of Ukrainian literary writings.

Academician Mykola Zhulynsky, who has headed the Institute since the year of Ukraine's independence, emphasized that thanks to the active work of many scientists, and especially textologists, in recent decades the Institute of Literature has published the complete set of T.G. Shevchenko works (12 volumes), the "Shevchenko Encyclopedia" (6 volumes), the "History of Ukrainian Literature" (12 volumes, the publication is almost completed), the 50-volume Collected Works of I.Ya. Franko (additional 5 volumes of his legacy have been published). There were also multi-volume editions of the works of Lesia Ukrainka, G.F. Kvitka-Osnovyanenko, M.T. Rylsky, P.G. Tychyna and other writers. Many scientific-critical and popular publications appeared, especially the works of writers from Ukraine and the diaspora that were banned during the years of the totalitarian regime.

The report also revealed that in 2014, just a few months after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Institute of Literature launched a series of publications for the front “Library of the Ukrainian Soldier”, in which “Kobzar” by T.G. Shevchenko with a foreword by S.A. Halchenko was published first. In 2015–2025, the series included works by S.V. Rudansky, B.D. Hrinchenko, Y.I. Lypa, Ostap Vyshnia, V.M. Sosiura, A.S. Malyshko, V.A. Symonenko, P.P. Glazovyi, D.V. Pavlychko and others, which are very popular at the front among the defenders of Ukraine.

The Institute's manuscript collection has the status of National Heritage. It contains almost 300 personal funds and funds of institutions and organizations of a literary and artistic profile, over 133 thousand depository items of especially valuable literary texts.

The Director of the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature noted that currently, among the important tasks of the institution's activities are ensuring the preservation, scientific processing, digitization and popularization of the manuscript and literary heritage of Ukraine as a component of national cultural memory, researching Ukrainian literature in the context of challenges associated with the Russian-Ukrainian war, modernizing approaches to publishing activities, developing electronic publication formats, expanding international scientific cooperation and integrating Ukrainian literary studies into the global academic space, etc.

Vasyl Kremen, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine and the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, President of the NAPS of Ukraine, Mykhaylo Sydorzhevsky, Chairman of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine, Academicians of the NAS of Ukraine Yaroslav Yatskiv, Oleksandr Kopylenko and Bohdan Azhnyuk participated in the substantive discussion.

The panelists congratulated the staff of the T.G. Shevchenko Institute of Literature on a significant date - the 100th anniversary and noted its substantial contribution to the preservation and development of Ukrainian literary heritage. They highlighted Institute's significant role in school literary education, in particular, the development of textbooks and curricula. It was emphasized that the Institute's activities are an important basis for the establishment of Ukrainian cultural identity, historical memory and ensuring the humanitarian security of the state.

The next report by the Leading research fellow of the Institute of Electrodynamics of the NAS of Ukraine, Viktor Hrebenikov, DSc in Engineering, was devoted to innovative electromechanical systems based on high-speed electric machines. The speaker said that the Institute carried out research aimed at solving important scientific and technical problems of significantly increasing the efficiency of electromechanical energy converters and expanding the scope of their application in strategically important industries - transport, renewable energy and aviation.

Thus, for the renewable energy industry, the Institute's scientists have substantiated the feasibility and prospects of using magnetic gearboxes in wind power plants. The scholars have proposed solutions that allow significantly reducing the weight and dimensions of the energy conversion system, increasing its reliability and simplifying maintenance. The developed mathematical and computer models confirm the effectiveness of the proposed technical solutions in view of variable wind loads.

A comparative analysis of traditional and promising types of electric motors has been performed for the electric transport industry. The research covers issues of thermal mode calculation, selection of magnetic system materials, and design optimization with account for real operating conditions.

Special attention was paid to the developments of the Institute's specialists commissioned by JSC "Ivchenko-Progres". In particular, they designed a unique high-speed electric motor with a capacity of 110 kW, rotor rotation frequency of 30,000 rpm and a mass of 40 kg and launched its production. The scholars solved a set of complex engineering tasks aimed at ensuring the mechanical strength of the rotors, minimizing heat losses and optimizing cooling systems. A starter-generator system was developed for applications requiring simultaneous start-up and power generation functions in a wide range of modes for aviation equipment. The starter-generator with a rotation frequency of 58,000 rpm and a mass of 1 kg provides power of 3 kW.

According to Viktor Hrebenikov, a promising focus area of the Institute's work is the development of magnetic electric drive systems with permanent magnets for unmanned cargo air vehicles. The Institute’s employees designed a 9 kW electric motor for UAVs with a load capacity of 150 kg and manufactured it. This development is due to the growing demand for unmanned technologies in logistics, agriculture and the defense industry.

It became known from the report, in order to increase the energy efficiency of pumping equipment and reduce its weight and dimensions, the Institute's scientists developed an experimental sample of an electric motor with permanent magnets for a well pump with a capacity of 37 kW and a mass of 50 kg, which is three times lighter than a similar modern asynchronous electric engine.

Ivchenko Machine-Building Design Bureau "Progress", Serhiy Kovbasa, DSc in Engineering, Head of the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drives of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute", Oleksandr Huly, Director of the "NTK DYNAMICS" Limited Liability Company, Academicians of the NAS of Ukraine Andriy Zharkin, Zinoviy Nazarchuk, Andriy Rusanov, Valeriy Geyets took part in the discussion.

The panelists emphasized the relevance, high practical significance and prospects of the research carried out at the Institute of Electrodynamics of the NAS of Ukraine. The proposed scientific and engineering solutions lay the foundation for the development of a new generation of energy-efficient electromechanical dual-purpose equipment, which is of great importance for strengthening the defense capability and technological independence of Ukraine. The need for further development of cooperation between the Institute and specialized enterprises of the defense-industrial complex, aircraft manufacturing and transport engineering, as well as leading Ukrainian and international partners, was particularly emphasized in order to accelerate the transfer of scientific results into industrial production and bring the developed dual-purpose electromechanical systems to the level of ready-made technical solutions.
