What does science working at the surface level – from molecules to technologies – look like? This was the focus of the working visit of the leadership of the NAS of Ukraine to the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry.
On April 3, 2026, Vice President of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Volodymyr Radchenko, together with the academic secretary of the Chemistry Department of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Petro Stryzhak, scientific secretaries of the Section and Department – Candidate of Biological Sciences Yevheniy Rutyan and Candidate of Biological Sciences Oksana Dzyuba – visited the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine on a working visit.
The O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine is the only scientific center in Ukraine where fundamental and applied problems of surface chemistry, physics, and technology are comprehensively studied. It operates at the intersection of several fields – from nanochemistry and chemical ecology to the creation of biologically active substances and new materials – focusing on acquiring knowledge and its practical application.
The Institute was established on May 8, 1986, on the initiative of NAS of Ukraine Academician O.O. Chuiko, who headed it from 1986 to 2006. Today, the institution bears his name.
Among the key scientific directions are the theory of chemical structure and reactivity of solid surfaces, physical chemistry of surface phenomena, medical and biological aspects of surfaces, as well as chemistry, physics, and technologies of nanomaterials.
The Deputy Director of the Institute, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Petro Horbyk, presented the scientific infrastructure of the institution, its scientific schools and key areas of work, modern developments and projects – particularly those with practical significance in current conditions. Special attention was given to updating the material and technical base, cooperation with higher education institutions, involving students and graduates in scientific work, as well as the results of the state certification of the institution.
According to Petro Horbyk, the Institute consistently ranks among the top three institutions of the Chemistry Department by several indicators and holds 32nd place in the national ranking of scientific institutions among more than 430 organizations. Such results are primarily the merit of the team, which continues to work and achieve results recognized internationally even under the difficult conditions of wartime.
Special attention during the visit was drawn to a specially prepared exhibition of scientific achievements. It presented the Institute’s developments, individual and collective monographs, scientific journals, reference publications, as well as archival materials reflecting the history of the institution’s formation and development.
The participants of the visit familiarized themselves with the work of the shared use center for scientific instruments "Mass Spectrometry and Liquid Chromatography." The head of the Center, Candidate of Chemical Sciences Iryna Lahuta, presented the material and technical base, main directions of work, and results of activities. They also discussed possibilities for the Center's modernization.
The guests visited the 3D printing laboratory, where Candidates of Chemical Sciences Oleksandr and Anatoliy Zolotarenko spoke about the modern capabilities of this technology and its application areas.
Summing up the visit, Vice President of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician Volodymyr Radchenko, noted the high level of research at the Institute, their practical value, and the active position of the team. He emphasized that the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine is one of the key institutions of the Academy where fundamental research is organically combined with applied developments important for the development of society, and wished the scientists further success and new achievements.
