From high theory to current applied problems: the Academy leadership visited the S.P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the NAS of Ukraine

02.04.2026

On March 31, 2026, the First Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, academician of NAS of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bohdanov, academician-secretary of the Department of Mechanics and Machine Science of NAS of Ukraine, academician of NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Nazarenko, scientific secretary of the Sector of Physical-Technical and Mathematical Sciences of NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences Serhiy Bespalov, and scientific secretary of the Department of Mechanics and Machine Science of NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Technical Sciences Yevhen Zadvornyi visited the S.P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of NAS of Ukraine.

The guests were welcomed by the administration of the institution: Deputy Director for Scientific Work, Corresponding Member of NAS of Ukraine Mykhailo Selivanov, Deputy Director for Scientific and Organizational Work, Corresponding Member of NAS of Ukraine Yevhen Storozhuk, and Scientific Secretary, Doctor of Technical Sciences Yurii Skosarenko.

During the visit, the Academy leadership representatives familiarized themselves with the structure of the Institute, the state of its material and technical base, and the activities of its scientific units. Special attention was paid to a specially prepared exhibition of scientific achievements, which presented individual and collective monographs, scientific journals, reference publications, as well as archival materials reflecting the history and development of the institution.

The guests also visited the Shared Use Center for Scientific Instruments "Dynamic Process Analyzer," where they learned about the capabilities of the Institute's modern experimental base.

Particular attention was given to applied developments. The head of the Center, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Volodymyr Maksymyuk, presented a number of engineering and experimental solutions created at the Center. In particular, he introduced the delegation to a model of a water bullet catcher for low-energy bullets, the results of research on the natural frequencies of a radio-transparent fairing, and unique experiments using tensometry to analyze the rhythmic patterns of Ukrainian folk dance music.

The Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Institute, Corresponding Member of NAS of Ukraine Mykhailo Selivanov, presented the main results of the institution's activities. In his report, he focused on key research areas covering fundamental and applied problems of deformable solid mechanics and general mechanics, as well as the structure of the Institute's scientific projects. As Mykhailo Selivanov noted, last year the Institute carried out 17 research topics, among which fundamental research predominated. At the same time, competitive projects and applied works, including those with a defense focus, are being developed.

Results of the institution's performance evaluation were also presented: based on the efficiency assessment, the Institute was classified in category "A," and based on the state attestation, in category "B."

The speaker also highlighted staffing issues. The Institute employs over 100 scientific staff. However, an important task remains the renewal of personnel and support for young scientists (currently there are ten in the institution).

Significant attention was paid to the development of scientific communication and international integration. The Institute serves as a publishing center in the field of mechanics, ensuring the operation of international scientific journals, and is expanding participation in international programs, including the NATO program "Science for Peace and Security," and developing cooperation with scientific institutions in Europe.

Separately, Mykhailo Selivanov spoke about steps toward digitalizing the Institute's activities: the official website is being updated, an information portal for employees and graduate students has been created, channels for prompt communication have been ensured, and all scientific events are held in a hybrid format using modern digital platforms.

The participants of the working meeting discussed current issues related to the functioning of the institution. In particular, topics raised included funding for scientific research, preservation and development of human resources, support for young scientists, and expanding cooperation with enterprises in the real sector of the economy.

It was emphasized that the Institute continues to restore infrastructure after enemy shelling. Among other things, the issue of restoring the heating system is acute. It requires major repairs and additional funds.

Summing up the visit, the First Vice President of NAS of Ukraine, academician of NAS of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bohdanov, noted the high scientific level of research at the Institute, their practical significance, and the active position of the institution's team, wishing the scientists further success and new significant results.
