From water purification to supercapacitors: what they are working on at the Institute of Sorption of the NAS of Ukraine

07.04.2026

Water, soil, and energy systems require precise solutions for purification, impurity removal, and process stabilization. This is exactly what the Institute of Sorption and Endoecology Problems of the NAS of Ukraine is engaged in.

On April 3, 2026, the institution was visited by representatives of the Academy's leadership, headed by the Vice President of the NAS of Ukraine, Chairman of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences, academician Volodymyr Radchenko. Along with him, the Institute was visited by the academician-secretary of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, academician Petro Stryzhak, the scientific secretary of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences, candidate of biological sciences Yevheniy Rutyan, and the scientific secretary of the Department of Chemistry, candidate of biological sciences Oksana Dzyuba.

Founded in 1991, the Institute is one of the leading institutions in Ukraine working in the field of synthesis, research, and practical application of sorption and catalytic materials. This includes specialized carbon and oxide sorbents, selective catalysts, as well as new carbon electrode materials.

The Institute's developments have a wide range of applications. Among them are:

  • inorganic ion exchangers for deep purification of complex solutions from radionuclides and heavy metals;
  • biosorptive composite materials for soil purification from pesticides and petroleum products;
  • selective catalysts for processing renewable raw materials and new catalytic processes;
  • promising carbon electrode materials for supercapacitors and their hybrids with batteries.

In recent years, the research topics have expanded: alongside the classical directions of sorption science, catalysis, and photocatalysis, solutions in the field of energy efficiency are actively developing, as well as work that has practical significance for strengthening the country's security.

The Director of the Institute, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Brey, presented the structure of the institution, its personnel potential, main research directions, and key results. According to him, one of the defining features of the Institute is its practical orientation – developments are closely related to the needs of ecology, the chemical industry, energy saving, and energy efficiency.

The Institute has a wide network of partnerships. This includes cooperation with other scientific institutions and higher education establishments, as well as interaction with business. In particular, together with LLC "Production Group Tekhinservice," they are working on new catalytic processes, and with LLC "Yunasco-Ukraine" – on the production of experimental batches of supercapacitors and hybrid energy elements.

Active integration into the global scientific space is evidenced by the Institute's participation in international programs. In 2024, the institution received a letter of appreciation from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for high performance in the "Horizon Europe" program. Among other indicators are numerous publications in international scientific journals, participation in conferences, and internships of employees at leading foreign centers.

During the visit, participants toured the Institute's laboratories and familiarized themselves with the research topics of its departments. The focus of the discussion was on further development of research, expansion of international cooperation, as well as attracting and supporting young scientists.
