Lecture topic: «Fast Fluxons Excite Short-Wavelength Magnons».
Abstract: Ferromagnetism and superconductivity are fundamental states in condensed matter physics. Recent discoveries in these modern fields allow exploring new physical phenomena at their boundaries. In this context, interactions between fundamental quasiparticles – quanta of magnetic flux (fluxons) in superconductors and quanta of spin waves (magnons) in magnetic materials – are particularly interesting. Although short-wavelength magnons are key elements of magnonic nanodevices, their coherent excitation remains a challenging task. Professor Dobrovolskiy will discuss experimental realizations showing that the motion of fast fluxons in a superconductor can excite magnons with a record-short wavelength of 36 nm. The generated magnons are monochromatic, and their wavelength is determined by the vortex lattice period, which can be tuned by an external magnetic field.
About the lecturer: Oleksandr Dobrovolskiy is a professor and head of the Cryogenic Quantum Electronics Department at the Institute of Electrical Measurements and Fundamental Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Braunschweig (Germany). He graduated from the Physics Faculty of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University and obtained a PhD in Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the B.I. Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the NAS of Ukraine (Kharkiv) in 2009. From 2009 to 2019, he worked as a postdoc and later as a project leader at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (Germany), where he habilitated in physics in 2016; the same year, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the B.I. Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the NAS of Ukraine (Kharkiv). From 2019 to 2024, he headed the Superconductivity and Spintronics Laboratory at the Physics Faculty of the University of Vienna and represented Germany and Austria in several European scientific networking programs. His research interests include superconductivity and fluxonics, magnetism and spintronics, three-dimensional nanostructures, hybrid systems, and quantum electronic devices.
