On April 15, 2026, the First Vice-President of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Section of Physical-Technical and Mathematical Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bogdanov, Academician-Secretary of the Earth Sciences Department of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Stella Shekhunova, Scientific Secretary of the Section of Physical-Technical and Mathematical Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences Serhiy Bespalov, and Scientific Secretary of the Earth Sciences Department of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Yaroslav Lutsiv visited the State Scientific Institution "Center for Marine Geology, Geoecology and Sedimentary Ore Formation Problems of the NAS of Ukraine".
The guests were welcomed by the Director of the Center, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Yemelyanov, and representatives of the scientific team of the Center.
The introduction to the institution began with a brief overview outlining the role and place of the Center within the structure of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as one of the leading centers for marine research and the only organization specializing in the comprehensive study of the geological structure of the Azov-Black Sea basin and geoecological problems of the Black Sea and other areas of the World Ocean.
During the visit, the Academy leadership toured the scientific and laboratory divisions of the Center, familiarized themselves with the scientific equipment and research topics carried out at the institution, and discussed the Center's participation in NAS of Ukraine scientific programs, domestic and international grant projects, and the execution of business contracts in the interests of the state.
The Director of the Center, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Yemelyanov, gave a report on the current state of the institution, its structure, personnel potential, experimental capabilities, priority areas of scientific activity, and development prospects. He emphasized that the institution participates in the implementation of relevant state applied and fundamental programs, as well as comprehensive international projects.
During the presentation, key thematic research areas were outlined, including:
- marine geological and geoecological research, development and improvement of their theoretical-methodological and technical base;
- study of the composition and structure of the Earth's crust, sedimentary and ore-forming processes, the impact of marine geoecosystems on the condition, vitality, and health of society, issues of searching for mineral deposits, development of technologies to increase the efficiency of extracting useful components from mineral raw materials and industrial waste.
The speaker emphasized that the main goal of the Center's activity is to obtain new scientific knowledge and use it for practical purposes, develop and improve the theoretical-methodological and technical base of such research in the areas of:
- general and marine geology: composition, structure, and dynamics of the Earth's crust, sedimentary and ore-forming processes, search for mineral deposits, development of technologies for extracting useful components from mineral raw materials, environmental preservation and restoration;
- marine geoecology: structure, specific conditions, including geological and oceanological, formation and location of geoecosystems, improvement of the ecological situation in the coastal zone of the Azov-Black Sea basin water area, other areas of the World Ocean, adjacent territories, the impact of marine geoecosystems, their dynamics, resources, and the ecosystem services they generate on the vitality of society, the health status of its members, and their welfare, as well as the development of technologies that improve the state of the environment.
