
On March 13, 2026, a delegation from the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, headed by the Vice President of the NAS of Ukraine, Chairman of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Radchenko, paid a working visit to the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine. The delegation also included the academic secretary of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Petro Stryzhak, head of the Sector of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the Scientific and Organizational Department of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine, candidate of biological sciences Yevheniy Rutyan, and scientific secretary of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, candidate of biological sciences Oksana Dzyuba.
The Institute of Organic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine is one of the leading scientific centers of the Academy, known for research in the field of mechanisms of organic reactions, heterocyclic and organoelement chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, and chemistry of biologically active compounds. Its developments are applied in industry, agriculture, medicine, and veterinary science.
During the visit, representatives of the leadership of the NAS of Ukraine familiarized themselves with the scientific infrastructure of the Institute, key areas of fundamental and applied research, modern developments, and international projects of the institution. Particular interest was aroused by promising technologies and results with potential for practical application. Special attention was paid to issues of modernization of the material and technical base and creating conditions for the effective work of scientific teams.
The Director of the Institute, corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine Mykhailo Vovk, together with the Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Institute, corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine Yuliya Rassukana, scientific secretary of the Institute, candidate of chemical sciences Vitaliy Nikitchenko, and leading scientists presented the structure of the institution, personnel potential, and main areas of activity. Among them are theoretical and experimental studies of the structure, color, and reactivity of organic compounds, fine organic synthesis, asymmetric synthesis and catalysis, chemistry of heteroatomic organic compounds, supramolecular chemistry of macrocyclic compounds, scientific foundations for the synthesis of compounds with practically useful properties, including physiologically active substances, cyanine dyes, organic catalysts, and complexing agents.
The delegation visited the scientific-analytical laboratories of the Institute, including the laboratory of chemical processes under pressure, where methodologies for selective reduction of organic compounds using metal catalysts and modern spectroscopic methods for reaction monitoring are developed.
The work of the laboratories of the department of physico-chemical research was also presented, equipped with nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, equipment for infrared spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography. These methods are used to determine the structure of compounds, monitor reactions, and study supramolecular systems, particularly as carriers of medicinal substances.
The delegation also familiarized themselves with the activities of the young scientists' laboratory, where new methods for synthesizing functional heterocyclic systems with potential pharmacological activity are being developed. The laboratory is new and well-equipped thanks to fruitful cooperation with the partner company "Yenamin." The Institute is a leader in the chemical field in terms of the number of young scientists (64 employees) and also trains 31 postgraduate students under the accredited educational and scientific program "Organic Chemistry."
During the visit, the Center for Collective Use of Scientific Instruments "X-ray Single Crystal Diffractometry" was presented, equipped with a modern single-crystal X-ray diffractometer for studying the molecular structure and properties of crystalline substances. In addition to determining molecular structure, the X-ray structural diffractometry method allows the study of phenomena such as polymorphism and phase transitions in crystals, investigation of conformational features of compounds, as well as subtle effects of their spatial and electronic structure.
Recently, flow reactors for the safe generation of diazomethane and a flow photoreactor have been installed and put into active operation in the laboratories of the department of physico-chemical research. The reactors are designed for the synthesis of building blocks for medicinal chemistry in multi-gram quantities. The semi-industrial flow photochemical reactor UOSlab® FlowReactor UF365/450 is the most advanced equipment of this type in Ukraine.
The delegation was also introduced to the Institute’s international scientific projects, including Ukrainian-Swiss research within the framework of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine competition (until 2026), cooperation with leading global companies “Chemours Company” (USA) and “Bayer AG” (Germany). The Institute actively attracts additional grant funding through the aforementioned Foundation’s competitions and supports promising scientific projects of young scientists.
During discussions following the visit, special emphasis was placed on the possibilities of updating scientific equipment, supporting young scientists, and expanding international cooperation as key factors for the further development of the Institute and maintaining its competitiveness in the global scientific space. It was emphasized that the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine is one of the key scientific centers of the Academy, where fundamental research is organically combined with innovative applied developments aimed at solving urgent problems of science, technology, and society.
