
On June 4, 2026, Anatoly Zagorodny, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, President of the NAS of Ukraine, Viacheslav Bogdanov, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, First Vice-President of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Section of Physical, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Ihor Krivtsun, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Materials Science of the NAS of Ukraine, Director of the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the NAS of Ukraine, and Zinoviy Nazarchuk, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Western Scientific Center of the NAS of Ukraine and the MES of Ukraine, Director of the G.V. Karpenko Physico-Mechanical Institute of the NAS of Ukraine, made a working visit to the I.R. Yukhnovsky Institute for Condensed Matter Physics (ICMPh) of the NAS of Ukraine.
In the course of the visit, a meeting was held with the management and staff of the institution, where the main results of the Institute's activities, its scientific achievements, and prospects for further development were presented.
Opening the meeting, Taras Bryk, Corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, Director of the I.R. Yukhnovsky Institute for Condensed Matter Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, made a brief historical excursion into the establishment and development of the institution, and presented a thorough report on the results of its activities during 2020–2025.
The main scientific areas of the Institute's activity are the statistical theory of condensed matter systems, computer modeling of processes in solids and soft matter, and the physics of complex systems.
Taras Bryk, Corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, emphasized the significant achievement of the institution – the development of scientific infrastructure, primarily the creation of the Interdisciplinary Center for Computer Modeling (ICCM). A new computing cluster was created and put into operation in 2025 as part of the infrastructure project of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, which has 1,632 processor (CPU) cores and 123,000 graphics (GPU) cores. According to the results of standard performance tests, its capacity is 43.9 teraflops, which gives grounds to consider it one of the most powerful in Ukraine. The new cluster is an integral part of the ICCM, it should become a core facility center in the future. Further expansion of its computing capacity is expected in 2026.
The Institute has a license from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine to conduct educational activities at the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education in specialty 104 "Physics and Astronomy". This March, the educational and scientific program successfully passed another accreditation by experts of the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
Presenting the institution, its Director noted that the Institute has two branches of the departments of the National University "Lviv Polytechnic". In addition, the scientific staff of the institution carry out teaching activities at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and the Ukrainian Catholic University. The Institute is a member of the International College of Doctoral Students in Statistical Physics of Complex Systems, which includes ICMPh, Coventry University (Great Britain), University of Lorraine (Nancy, France) and the University of Leipzig (Germany).
The results of scientific research and the publication activity of the Institute's scientists meet the highest academic standards. Over the past five years, on average, one article per scientist per year has been published in publications indexed by the international scientometric databases Web of Science and Scopus.
Important evidence of the high level of scientific research is the publications of Institute’s employees in leading world scientific publications with high citation rates, in particular in the journals Nature, Nature Reviews Physics, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Physical Review Letters and others.
Maksym Dudka, DSc in Physics and Mathematics, Head of the Department of Statistical Theory of Condensed Systems, Taras Patsagan, DSc in Physics and Mathematics, Head of the Department of Soft Matter Theory, Taras Verkholiak, DSc in Physics and Mathematics, Head of the Department of Quantum Statistics, and Yaroslav Ilnytsky, DSc in Physics and Mathematics, Head of the Department of Computer Modeling of Many-Particle Systems made reports on current areas of scientific research.
The meeting participants were greatly interested in the speech of Igor Protsykevych, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, head of the newly created department "Center for Information and Communication Networks "Uarnet". The main tasks of this department are to maintain the Academic Data Exchange Network (ADEN) of the NAS of Ukraine and provide telecommunication services to NAS of Ukraine institutions, educational and scientific institutions, as well as budget organizations. ADEN of the NAS of Ukraine covers 109 institutions of the Academy and is a virtual network built on the basis of a dedicated segment of IP addresses.
To increase the level of security of AMOD, a new approach has been proposed - the creation of a Unified Digital Space (UDS), i.e. a virtual local area network, within which all institutions of the NAS of Ukraine will be combined into a single switching infrastructure. This will allow for traffic exchange between all network participants at speeds from 1 to 10 Gbit/s. At the same time, all AMOD participants will not be physically connected to one switch. Instead, a virtual switch-exchanger will function, which will provide traffic exchange between network participants and access to the global public Internet.
The creation of the Unified Digital Space opens up additional opportunities for reliable protection against DDoS attacks, malware, and other cyber threats. Igor Protsykevych also raised the issue of optimizing electricity costs and outlined a number of other problematic issues that need to be resolved at the level of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine.
Anatoly Zagorodny, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, President of the NAS of Ukraine, and Ihor Krivtsun and Zinovy Nazarchuk, Academicians of the NAS of Ukraine, took part in the discussion of the reports heard.
Academician Anatoly Zagorodny noted the high scientific level and relevance of the research conducted at the Institute. He emphasized that the staff of the institution has been significantly refreshed in recent years, and wished the team to continue to actively work on involving young researchers in scientific activities.
Academician Ihor Krivtsun highly appreciated the results and prospects of the Institute's scientific research, noting that they may be of significant interest to the institutions of the Department of Materials Science of the NAS of Ukraine and serve as a basis for expanding scientific cooperation.
Noting the high level of international scientific cooperation of the institution, Academician Zinoviy Nazarchuk expressed his wish to further expand interaction with scientific institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and strengthen intra-academic scientific ties.
