On July 8, 2026, the EASE Ukraine webinar "Development of Scholar Communication in Ukraine: Publication Ethics, Journal Quality, and Integration into the European Research Area" took place. About one hundred participants joined the event, including representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and leading Ukrainian universities – both from the capital and regional ones. The audience was notably diverse and consisted of directors, chief editors and deputy chief editors of publishing houses, responsible secretaries and responsible editors, journal managers, editorial board members, scientific editors, researchers, technical secretaries, technical editors, layout designers, responsible performers, and editorial assistants. Many participants, by the way, are integrated into professional communities as members of the European Association of Science Editors and the Association of Ukrainian Editors.
EASE Ukraine is the Ukrainian regional branch of the European Association of Science Editors – a global community of science editors and communication specialists striving to strengthen trust in research by improving editorial quality. Thanks to expert resources, practical advice, and a strong international network, EASE ensures excellence at every stage of the editorial process, develops an inclusive network of experienced science editors and communication specialists united by a commitment to quality and research integrity. Therefore, the target audience of the webinar included chief editors, editorial board members, and editorial staff of Ukrainian scientific journals interested in professional development and participation in new national certification initiatives, working on:
- improving the quality, international visibility, and impact of their journals, as well as strengthening their integration into the European Research Area;
- implementing international standards of publication ethics (COPE, EASE), open science principles, and other advanced practices to enhance editorial policy, peer review, and publishing practices;
- preparing journals for inclusion in international scientometric and abstract databases, including DOAJ, Scopus, and Web of Science.
The webinar aimed to:
- familiarize the scientific community with the results of the activities of the Commission on Publication Ethics of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and define the strategy for further development and updating of the National List of Scientific Periodicals;
- align national practice with international standards and criteria for evaluating scientific research;
- develop joint mechanisms for detecting and preventing predatory publishing practices.
The event featured speakers from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the State Scientific and Technical Library of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Office for Research Integrity, the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the European Association of Science Editors (EASE),
the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH) and its Ukrainian branch, the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and the Association of Ukrainian Editors.
On behalf of the Scientific Publishing Council of the NAS of Ukraine, invited speakers were Volodymyr Ustymenko, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, member of the Presidium of NAS of Ukraine, Deputy Chair of the Scientific and Publishing Council of the NAS of Ukraine, and Anna Radchenko, PhD in Geology, Director of the "Akademperiodyka" Publishing House of the NAS of Ukraine. They participated in the discussion "Experience of Academic Institutions and Professional Associations".
