On May 14, 2026, events were held in Odessa to honor the memory of the outstanding scientist in the field of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, studies of the structure and reactivity of organic and coordination compounds, catalytic organic synthesis, and supramolecular chemistry, educator and organizer of scientific research, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Herbert Leonovich Kamalov.
H.L. Kamalov and his colleagues made a significant contribution to the study of the catalytic properties of mono- and polynuclear complexes of 3d metals in liquid-phase oxidation of organic compounds with activated CH bonds by oxygen from the air and hydrogen peroxide. Academician Herbert Kamalov successfully combined fundamental research with the development of processes of important practical significance. Catalytic methods for the comprehensive utilization of waste from the chemical, petrochemical, and metallurgical industries were created and improved, as well as industrial and laboratory methods for obtaining and purifying a number of organic and coordination compounds, which were implemented at enterprises in Ukraine.
H.L. Kamalov took an active civic position in the formation of the independent Ukrainian state, was a member of the Odessa Society of Armenian Culture, and chairman of the Council of the Association of National Enlightenment Societies of Odessa and the Odessa region.
Scientists of the O.V. Bogatsky Physical-Chemical Institute of the NAS of Ukraine, together with its director, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Viktor Kuzmin, participated in memorial events on the territory of the Armenian Church (the Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator). They also visited the International Ukrainian-Armenian School and laid flowers at the memorial stand dedicated to academician of the NAS of Ukraine Herbert Kamalov.
As part of the events honoring the memory of the outstanding chemist, a film about the life path and significant achievements of the scientist was shown to the institute’s staff.
