On May 12, 2026, as part of the celebration of the International Day of Women in Mathematics, a landmark event took place at the Institute of Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine – an international scientific-practical seminar “Ukrainian Women in Mathematics: Symmetry Analysis and Applications” (“Ukrainian Women in Mathematics: Symmetry Analysis and Its Applications”). This event was the first in a new large-scale series of international seminars aimed at uniting talented Ukrainian female researchers around current problems of modern science. It should be noted that this initiative is part of the global May12 movement, aimed at supporting and strengthening the role of women in the global mathematical community.
The event was organized by the leading researcher of the Department of Mathematical Physics of the Institute of Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine, corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine Olena Vaneeva, and the head of the Council of Young Scientists of the Institute of Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine, junior researcher of the Department of Mathematical Physics of this Institute, PhD Oleksandra Vynnychenko. Thanks to the active support of the Institute’s Council of Young Scientists and the use of an online format, the seminar brought together colleagues from different parts of Ukraine, as well as Ukrainian female scientists currently representing our country in leading scientific centers around the world. All this ensured a wide audience reach and a lively intellectual dialogue.
The main goal of the meeting was to strengthen professional connections among researchers working in the field of group analysis of differential equations and Lie algebras. The program of the event covered a wide range of presentations dedicated to the latest methods of symmetry analysis and their practical applications. In addition to presenting fundamental results, the seminar became a unique space for exchanging experiences, where the younger generation of mathematicians had the opportunity to gain knowledge and listen to the recollections of experienced colleagues.
The event was particularly distinguished by an extremely warm and friendly atmosphere: alongside discussions of complex scientific problems, participants shared personal stories – recalling their student years, mentors, and first steps in the academic environment. Such sincere communication emphasized the importance of continuity of scientific traditions and mutual support within the Ukrainian mathematical community.
The significance of the event was also highlighted in speeches by honorary guests. Greetings were extended by the academic secretary of the Department of Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine, director of the Institute of Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Oleksandr Tymoha, scientific secretary of the Department, candidate of technical sciences Petro Kobrin, head of the Department of Mathematical Physics of the Institute of Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences Vyacheslav Boyko, and head of the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Informatics of the V.G. Korolenko Poltava National Pedagogical University, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor Mykola Serov. In their speeches, they emphasized the invaluable contribution of women to the development of mathematics and wished longevity to the new project and inexhaustible energy for new achievements to its participants.
The series of events “Ukrainian Women in Mathematics” is intended to become a permanent platform for professional communication and the promotion of the role of women in science. This is the beginning of a great journey aimed at developing the intellectual potential of Ukraine.
