Scientific principles of water quality assessment, advanced technologies for its purification, management of the properties of dispersed and membrane systems: the Academy leadership visited the A.V. Dumansky Institute of Colloid Chemistry and Water Chemis

31.03.2026

On March 27, 2026, the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, academician of NAS of Ukraine Anatoliy Zahorodniy, the first vice-president of NAS of Ukraine, head of the Section of Physical-Technical and Mathematical Sciences of NAS of Ukraine, academician of NAS of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bohdanov, vice-president of NAS of Ukraine, head of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of NAS of Ukraine, academician of NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Radchenko, academician-secretary of the Department of Chemistry of NAS of Ukraine, academician of NAS of Ukraine Petro Stryzhak, scientific secretary of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of NAS of Ukraine, candidate of biological sciences Yevheniy Rutyan, and scientific secretary of the Department of Chemistry of NAS of Ukraine, candidate of biological sciences Oksana Dziuba paid a working visit to the A.V. Dumansky Institute of Colloid Chemistry and Water Chemistry of NAS of Ukraine.

The A.V. Dumansky Institute of Colloid Chemistry and Water Chemistry of NAS of Ukraine is the only academic institution in our country whose activities are related to the comprehensive study of all aspects of water chemistry and technology. This determines the leading role of the Institute in developing strategies for the preservation and restoration of Ukraine’s water resources, providing the population with high-quality drinking water, as well as in developing advanced technologies and materials, methods of analysis, and water quality assessment that contribute to the implementation of these strategies for environmental protection and public health preservation.

Alongside priority research in the fields of water purification, water treatment, analysis, and monitoring of the quality of natural, drinking, and wastewater, under martial law conditions and post-war recovery of Ukraine, the Institute’s research in colloid chemistry is also extremely relevant. Both ecologically and economically important are developments aimed at creating second-kind electroosmotic pumps for microfluidics based on electroosmosis discovered at the Institute, intensifying electrodialysis through pulsed voltage supply, creating environmentally friendly energy sources based on reverse electrodialysis, soil remediation from heavy metals, radionuclides, and hydrophobic organic compounds, contamination of which has significantly increased due to military actions. The Institute is also developing composite suspension fuel based on coal and liquid organic waste, which can be used to replace diesel fuel and fuel oil in stationary and mobile power-generating units. This creates prospects for improving Ukraine’s energy supply amid energy resource shortages and contributes to environmental protection through the utilization of organic wastewater.

The Director of the Institute, academician of NAS of Ukraine Vladyslav Honcharuk, acquainted the Academy’s leadership with the scientific infrastructure of the institution, its scientific schools and main areas of activity, current developments, and projects. Special attention was paid to issues of developing international cooperation, expanding the material and technical base, interaction with higher education institutions, and activities to involve students and graduates of specialized universities in the Institute’s team and its scientific work.

The delegation from the Presidium of NAS of Ukraine familiarized themselves with the Shared Use Center for instruments and also toured the Institute’s scientific laboratories, where membrane and advanced oxidative water purification processes and combined processes based on them are studied; activated carbon properties from raw materials of various origins are obtained and investigated; composite sorption materials for extracting and concentrating toxicants of various chemical natures from water are synthesized; highly sensitive and highly selective methods for determining microcomponents in water are developed. Significant attention was given to laboratories of electrochemical soil remediation methods and the development of composite water-coal fuel.

The guests also visited the biotesting laboratory of the Scientific and Technical Water Testing Center, which operates within the Institute and analyzes water quality according to 80 indicators (physicochemical, microbiological, biotesting). In accordance with Ukrainian legislation, the Center is certified for technical competence and independence.

Members of the delegation communicated with the Institute’s scientists, discussed existing problems and possibilities for their resolution, and paid attention to the acute issue of the decreasing number of young researchers. During the visit, issues regarding the prospects for modernization and expansion of the instrument base, infrastructure renewal, strengthening international cooperation, and support for young scientists were raised. The delegation members noted that the A.V. Dumansky Institute of Colloid Chemistry and Water Chemistry of NAS of Ukraine is a key institution where fundamental and applied research is of great importance for the sustainable and harmonious development of our society.
