Senior Research Fellow at the M. T. Rylsky Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, film critic, film and Dovzhenko scholar, screenwriter Serhiy Trymbach has become a laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine 2026 – the highest state award of Ukraine for significant contribution to the development of culture and art.
He was awarded the high state honor in the category "Literary Studies and Art Studies" for the book "Ivan Mykolaichuk. Mysteries of Fate," the second edition of which was published in 2023 by Dukh i Litera publishing house.
The book is dedicated to the figure of the outstanding Ukrainian actor, director, and screenwriter Ivan Mykolaichuk and reveals the complex and dramatic fate of the artist in the context of the development of Ukrainian cinema and cultural life in the second half of the 20th century.
The corresponding decree awarding the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine 2026 was signed by Volodymyr Zelensky on March 9, 2026.
On the same day, a solemn award ceremony took place in Kyiv with the participation of the President of Ukraine and representatives of the cultural community. The prize is traditionally awarded on March 9 – the birthday of Taras Shevchenko.
Serhiy Trymbach is a well-known Ukrainian film scholar and cultural expert, a long-time researcher of the history of Ukrainian cinema, author of numerous publications, scripts, and books. Over the years, he has headed the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine. Laureate of the Oleksandr Dovzhenko State Prize of Ukraine (2008), the Felix Sobolev Prize (2006), the Viktor Dyomin Prize (2007), and the James Mace Prize (2016), Honored Art Worker of Ukraine. In 2024, he was recognized with the national film award "Golden Dzyga" for his contribution to the development of Ukrainian cinematography.
