Scientists of the NAS of Ukraine are implementing a new technology that increases the efficiency of biogas power plants.

The Gas Institute of the NAS of Ukraine, within the framework of the international project Innovate Ukraine, is completing the installation of an innovative unit at a biogas power plant in Kamianets-Podilskyi (Khmelnytskyi region), which will increase electricity production by approximately 10% and simultaneously produce commercial carbon dioxide and heat for the agricultural sector.

The project is being implemented jointly with British partners. It involves a cutting-edge technology for separating biogas into methane and carbon dioxide, enabling the conversion of waste into additional energy and industrial resources.

Specialists from the Gas Institute of the NAS of Ukraine have developed a technological scheme for biogas purification using an amine absorption process, a new sorbent, and optimized operating parameters. According to the developers' estimates, this reduces energy consumption by 2-3 times compared to traditional technologies.

What does this mean in practice?

  • Increased generation – electricity production at the biogas power plant increases by 10%.
  • Agro-innovations – commercial carbon dioxide and heat are produced simultaneously. They can be supplied to greenhouses, significantly reducing the cost of grown products.
  • Environmental effect – reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will contribute to improving the environmental condition in the region.

The development of distributed generation today is one of the key directions in energy modernization, especially under conditions of war and damage to energy infrastructure. According to expert assessments, the potential for biogas (biomethane) production in Ukraine exceeds 10 billion m³ per year in natural gas equivalent, and the potential capacity of distributed generation can reach 3.5 GW. Currently, the installed capacity of biogas power plants has already exceeded 100 MW, producing over 1 billion kWh of electricity, which has allowed reducing emissions by approximately 5 million tons of CO₂ equivalent.

Within the project framework in Kamianets-Podilskyi, additional production of about 200 MWh of electricity per year, 2.3 GWh of heat, and a reduction of CO₂ emissions by 760 tons annually are expected. The creation of new jobs is also planned.

The project is currently at the final stage of installation works.
