Senior researchers of the Carpathian Ecology Institute of the NAS of Ukraine Iryna Rabyk and Nadiya Sychak participated in an international training on biodiversity monitoring and reporting preparation in accordance with the requirements of the EU Habitats and Birds Directives.
The event took place from April 14 to 16, 2026, at the Lammi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki (Finland) within the UFEM project, with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, scientific institutions, and nature conservation organizations.
The UFEM project ("Support to Ukraine in environmental damage assessment and development of surface water quality and biodiversity monitoring") is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and aims to develop environmental monitoring and support European integration processes.
Experts from the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and the Finnish Museum of Natural History (LUOMUS) presented practical approaches to organizing monitoring, data collection and analysis, assessment of the status of species and habitats, as well as reporting preparation for various taxonomic groups.
The acquired experience will contribute to the implementation of systematic biodiversity monitoring in Ukraine and the application of European standards for assessing the status of species and ecosystems, particularly those under special protection.
Ukrainian scientists express sincere gratitude to the staff of the Finnish Environment Institute, the Finnish Museum of Natural History, the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, the M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany of the NAS of Ukraine, and the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the NAS of Ukraine for cooperation and fruitful discussion.
