On May 12–13, 2026, the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Scientific and Legal Aspects of the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Forest and High-Mountain Ecosystems of the Ukrainian Carpathians" was held in Uzhhorod, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Vasyl Ivanovych Komendar.
Organizers of the conference: Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, Zakarpattia Regional Military Administration, Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, State Higher Education Institution "Uzhhorod National University," Institute of Ecology of the Carpathians of the NAS of Ukraine.
Employees of the Institute of Ecology of the Carpathians of the NAS of Ukraine actively participated in the conference. The event brought together scientists, conservationists, representatives of higher education institutions, nature reserve institutions, and public organizations from Ukraine and other countries of the Carpathian region.
Within the plenary session, the director of the Institute of Ecology of the Carpathians of the NAS of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Ivan Danylyk, presented a report dedicated to the state of the plant cover of the high mountains of the Ukrainian Carpathians in the context of climate change and anthropogenic transformation of the environment. Significant attention of the conference participants was also drawn to the report by the head of the Department of Natural Ecosystem Protection of the Institute of Ecology of the Carpathians of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Biological Sciences Oleksandr Kahal, dedicated to the ecological, socio-economic, and demographic challenges related to the war and relocation of enterprises in the Carpathian region.
At the sectional sessions, the institute's employees presented research results on forest, meadow, and high-mountain ecosystems of the Carpathians. In particular, senior researcher, Candidate of Biological Sciences Iryna Rabyk, presented a report "Diversity and Indicator Significance of Rare Bryophytes of Spruce Forests of the Ukrainian Carpathians," dedicated to the role of mosses in assessing the condition of natural forest ecosystems.
The conference discussed current challenges in nature conservation, the impact of climate change on mountain ecosystems, issues of sustainable nature management, the development of environmental legislation, and the role of the nature reserve fund in preserving the natural heritage of the Ukrainian Carpathians.
The conference became an important platform for scientific dialogue, experience exchange, and development of cooperation in the field of research and conservation of natural ecosystems of the Carpathian region.
