Scientists of the Academy held a round table dedicated to the issue of institutionalizing evolutionary cybernetics as a new interdisciplinary scientific field.

On May 25, 2026, a Round Table was held on the institutionalization of a new interdisciplinary scientific direction — evolutionary cybernetics.

The discussion was attended by the Vice President of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the North-Eastern Scientific Center of the NAS of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Seminozhenko, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Oleksandr Palahin, Advisor to the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Mykhailo Zgurovskyi, Director of the Ukrainian Language and Information Fund of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Shyrokov, academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine Serhii Kosterin, Director of the Institute of Space Research of the NAS of Ukraine and the State Space Agency of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Mykola Salnikov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the National Center "Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine," Doctor of Technical Sciences Oleksandr Stryzhak, Head of Department at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Yurii Krak, Head of Department at the V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics of the NAS of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Petro Stetsiuk, Leading Researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine Oleksandr Shvets.

During the discussion, it was noted that evolutionary cybernetics is being formed as a direction aimed at studying the patterns of development of complex systems and mechanisms of their purposeful control. Unlike classical models, which are mainly focused on stabilizing the current state, this approach considers changes in structure, goals, adaptation rules, and self-regulation mechanisms of the system as a separate subject of scientific analysis.

The connection of this direction with the traditions of the Ukrainian cybernetic school of academician V.M. Glushkov was emphasized, as well as its relevance for research on artificial intelligence, digital twins, complex sociotechnical systems, biomedical technologies, infrastructure systems, and processes of controlled development.

As a result of the discussion, it was proposed to focus further work on forming the theoretical and methodological foundations of evolutionary cybernetics, refining its conceptual apparatus, in particular the concepts of controlled evolution, metacontrol, evolutionary stability, cybernetic invariants, and complexity management.

Special emphasis was placed on the feasibility of combining the evolutionary approach with the tools of system analysis, nonlinear dynamics, entropy modeling, cognitive sciences, and artificial intelligence methods. The need to create a consolidated scientific platform within the NAS of Ukraine was also noted, which would unite the research potential of various departments of the Academy around the problems of controlled evolution of complex systems.

Among practical steps, the Round Table participants proposed developing inter-institutional cooperation, preparing a scientific program for the direction, identifying applied test sites for the trial of relevant models, as well as initiating educational courses, seminars, and conferences for young scientists.

The event was attended by 19 scientists from various institutions of the NAS of Ukraine and higher education establishments. Participants noted that the institutionalization of evolutionary cybernetics could contribute to the formation of a new interdisciplinary platform for research, modeling, and management of the development of complex systems amid rapid technological and social changes with a projection towards sustainable development of Ukraine.
