On May 6, 2026, during an offsite meeting of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine and the Presidium of the NAMS of Ukraine at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, a General Agreement on scientific and technical cooperation was signed between the Joint Stock Company "National Nuclear Energy Generating Company "Energoatom"" and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The agreement provides for deepening cooperation in the field of nuclear energy development, enhancing the safety of nuclear facilities, and implementing advanced scientific and technical projects.
"The National Academy of Sciences and its institutes highly value cooperation with the Joint Stock Company "National Nuclear Energy Generating Company "Energoatom"", which has been ongoing for many years," emphasized the President of the NAS of Ukraine, academician Anatoliy Zahorodniy. "More than twenty scientific institutions of the NAS of Ukraine participate in solving problems related to the operation and development of Ukraine's nuclear energy complex, including creating conditions for the safe and reliable operation of nuclear power units, extending their operational life, diversifying nuclear fuel, developing control and safety systems for power units, handling radioactive waste, and more."
As noted by the head of the Academy, within the framework of the signed agreement, current and prospective tasks for the development of the national nuclear energy sector will be addressed, and close cooperation between scientists and nuclear energy specialists is aimed at solving extremely complex problems of a strategically important industry for Ukraine.
The purpose of the agreement is to facilitate the implementation of Ukraine's nuclear energy development strategy, support, and introduction of advanced scientific and technical developments and technologies. To achieve this goal, 26 key areas of cooperation have been identified, which involve conducting research, providing expert and scientific-technical support.
"We must utilize the entire domestic potential, primarily scientific and technical, to enhance the safety of our facilities and develop new technologies. Many engineering developments have emerged precisely thanks to the contribution of Ukrainian scientists. The team of JSC "NNEGC Energoatom" thanks them for supporting the nuclear industry, which in Ukraine has been and remains a safe and reliable foundation of the country's energy independence," emphasized the acting Chairman of the Board of JSC "NNEGC Energoatom," Pavlo Kovtonyuk.
At the conclusion of the signing, the President of the NAS of Ukraine, academician Anatoliy Zahorodniy, expressed confidence that the further development of effective mutually beneficial cooperation between the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company "Energoatom" and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine will contribute to the implementation of state policy in the field of reliable and safe functioning of nuclear energy and solving its current problems.
