On May 19, 2026, the IX All-Ukrainian Conference "Current Issues of History, Philosophy, and Law in the Research of Young Scientists" took place.
The event was held in a hybrid format: in-person at the State Institution "Institute of World History of the NAS of Ukraine" and online on the Zoom platform.
The conference was organized by the councils of young scientists of five scientific institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: the State Institution "Institute of World History of the NAS of Ukraine," the Institute of History of Ukraine of the NAS of Ukraine, the H.S. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the NAS of Ukraine, the V.M. Koretsky Institute of State and Law of the NAS of Ukraine, and the I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the NAS of Ukraine.
This year, the conference brought together about 70 young researchers – masters, postgraduates, PhDs (candidates of sciences), and lecturers from various regions of Ukraine. The participation of veterans and combatants, who reintegrate into civilian life after service, including through academic and research activities, was extremely valuable and significant.
The welcoming speech was delivered by the head of the Council of Young Scientists of the State Institution "Institute of World History of the NAS of Ukraine," junior research fellow, Doctor of Philosophy Victor Lushchak. On behalf of the Institute's management, he congratulated the participants on the opening of the conference, emphasizing that this event, established in 2017, continues stable academic traditions and remains an important platform for professional dialogue, testing scientific research results, and interdisciplinary exchange of experience. In his speech, Victor Lushchak also proposed not to limit the format to annual conferences but to consider the possibility of launching seasonal (summer or winter) scientific schools in Kyiv and Lviv, as well as introducing other innovative forms of interaction among young scientists.
The plenary session was opened by a highly topical report by junior research fellow of the I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the NAS of Ukraine and the Memorial Museum of Totalitarian Regimes "Territory of Terror," Candidate of Historical Sciences Yulia Artymyshyn, titled "Practices of Deportation of Ukrainian Children during the Russian-Ukrainian War 2014–2026." The researcher analyzed the mechanisms of forced displacement of Ukrainian children systematically applied by the Russian Federation since 2014, especially intensively after the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. It was argued that such actions are part of the Russian Federation's state policy aimed at Russification, political indoctrination, and eradication of Ukrainian national identity among children from temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
Junior research fellow of the V.M. Koretsky Institute of State and Law of the NAS of Ukraine Valeria Khodosh highlighted certain aspects of absolute liability in international law as a form of responsibility for lawful activities. The speaker thoroughly analyzed the mechanism for implementing the provisions of the Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects (1972) and paid special attention to modern challenges affecting the effectiveness of this conventional mechanism amid the rapid development of international space law.
The concluding report of the plenary session was delivered by senior researcher, senior research fellow of the I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Historical Sciences Pavlo Artymyshyn. His speech was devoted to practices of preserving the memory of fallen Ukrainian soldiers in interwar Lviv, particularly the activities of the Regional Committee for the Protection of Military Graves and the Society for the Protection of War Graves. The report emphasized forms of honoring fallen defenders of Ukraine and the significance of memory policy in shaping national historical consciousness.
After the plenary session, conference participants continued their work in sections on the following topics: world history, history of Ukraine, philosophy, state and law, as well as a separate thematic panel dedicated to Russia's war against Ukraine. The sections were moderated by the heads of the councils of young scientists of the organizing institutes.
The sectional meetings were conducted in the format of active professional dialogue. The topics of the reports covered a wide interdisciplinary range of issues in contemporary humanities, facilitating productive exchange of ideas and active involvement of participants in scientific discussion. In particular, during the conference, the following were considered: features of Russian anti-German military-propaganda literature of the First World War period, anti-imperial discourse in the pages of the "Shashkevichiana" collection, issues of colonization in Ukrainian historical science, representation of Soviet repressions in the memoir discourse of dissidents of the Ukrainian SSR, repressive policies towards Orthodox clergy and believers in the post-war period, hybridization of Russian Federation's influence tools using France as an example, legal principles of digital governance in de-occupied territorial communities, phenomenology of responsibility, metamodernism as (non) denial of postmodernism, the paradox of war as a factor in technological development of society, the place of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy on the intellectual map of early modern Europe, the position of Persian Gulf countries regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Azerbaijani factor in the context of the current war in Ukraine, and many others.
For example, Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology of the State Institution "Taras Shevchenko Luhansk National University," Candidate of Historical Sciences Yehor Brailyan dedicated his report to the Ukrainian factor in the socio-political life of Great Britain in the 1970s–1980s, detailing the activities of the Ukrainian diaspora and its influence on British public discourse.
Associate Professor of the Department of Art History and Art Education of the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boychuk, Doctor of Philosophy Olena Romanova presented a report titled "Reflections of the French Intellectual Elite on the War in Ukraine: Philosophical Dimensions and Existential Forecasts." The speech analyzed the reactions of French intellectuals to the Russian-Ukrainian war and highlighted the features of understanding contemporary security and civilizational challenges in French society.
Postgraduate student of the V.M. Koretsky Institute of State and Law of the NAS of Ukraine Vladyslav Yuriev addressed problematic aspects of applying the institute of reconciliation of parties in tax disputes and outlined the limits of its implementation in the context of the public-legal nature of tax legal relations. The report argued for the necessity of improving current regulatory frameworks to ensure effective functioning of this institute.
Research fellow of the State Institution "Institute of World History of the NAS of Ukraine," Candidate of Historical Sciences Volodymyr Volkov analyzed Kazakhstan's role in the economic and logistical mechanisms by which the Russian Federation circumvents international sanctions, as well as the impact of these processes on regional security and the system of international economic relations.
Postgraduate student of the H.S. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the NAS of Ukraine Yevhenia Shklyarenko presented a report titled "Cultural Values and Their Transformation in Wartime: Consequences of the Destruction of Cultural Heritage," highlighting the war's impact on cultural values and collective memory, and drawing attention to the specifics of their international legal protection.
Master of History, independent researcher Yurii Yakovlev analyzed the relations of Roman Yaroshevych with German social democracy in the 1890s, assessing the influence of the European socialist movement on the Ukrainian political environment at the end of the 19th century.
Particular interest among participants was sparked by the presentation of research fellow of the I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Philosophy Iryna Lutsyk, who highlighted Adrian Prakhov's funeral studies in Volhynia. Besides a deep analysis of the region's burial culture and memorial practices, the researcher demonstrated unique photographs from Adrian Prakhov's personal album depicting authentic Volhynian artifacts.
Overall, the conference was attended by postgraduates and young scientists from the State Institution "Institute of World History of the NAS of Ukraine," Institute of History of Ukraine of the NAS of Ukraine, I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the NAS of Ukraine, H.S. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the NAS of Ukraine, V.M. Based on the results of the IX All-Ukrainian Conference of Young Scientists, it is planned to prepare a collection of abstracts for publication.
