On March 20, 2026, the thirty-first session of the interdisciplinary general academic seminar in the field of natural sciences "Current Issues of Physical-Chemical and Mathematical Biology" will be held at the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine.
The report "Beauty, multifacetedness, and diversity of living nature. Landscape photos as a tool for its study" will be presented by the well-known Ukrainian photo artist Igor Chervonenko, who worked in the 1980s–1990s at the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine – in the scientific group led by academician of the NAS of Ukraine Serhiy Kosterin (then still a candidate of biological sciences) – on solving problems related to the influence of the proton gradient on the transmembrane exchange of calcium ions Ca2+ in smooth muscle cells.

Photo artist Igor Chervonenko
The interest in artistic photography, the knowledge about nature acquired at the university, and love for it combined in the speaker into a series of photographic materials, which, as he hopes, have not only artistic but also scientific value. He has visited more than 50 countries worldwide and, thanks to numerous travels, has made many informative, educational, and artistic photos of living nature objects. Igor Chervonenko's works have prestigious awards and have been published in authoritative publications such as "National Geographic" magazine (referring to photographs of the wildlife of Kenya and Tanzania). His creative output consists of kilometers of film and terabytes of information. The topic of the report fully corresponds to the interdisciplinary focus of the seminar, as issues of nature protection, the unity of humans with living nature, the "balance" in the "human-nature" system, conservation, and environmental monitoring are also to some extent interdisciplinary. In his presentation, illustrated with his own photographs, Igor Chervonenko will talk about:
- photography as a tool for studying living nature;
- manifestations of natural selection in the real environment through the eyes of a photographer;
- behavioral features of some species of animals and birds captured in photos;
- the diversity of the animal world of our planet;
- less widely known representatives of the ornithofauna of Ukraine living near us.

The interdisciplinary general academic seminar in the field of natural sciences "Current Issues of Physical-Chemical and Mathematical Biology" was established at the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine according to the Resolution of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine No. 134 dated March 22, 2023.
The purpose of the seminar is the periodic hearing and discussion of scientific reports devoted to the application of modern experimental and theoretical methods of chemistry, physics, and mathematics to solve urgent problems of modern biology, particularly in the fields of biochemistry, biophysics, molecular and cellular biology, bioenergetics, genomics, medical biology, pharmacology, nanobiotechnology, systems and synthetic biology.
The seminar is necessitated by the progress of such "cross-cutting" sciences and scientific directions as biophysical chemistry, physical biochemistry, chemical biophysics, biochemical physics, physical-chemical biology, physics of the living, mathematical biophysics, theoretical biology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence in biology and medicine, etc.
The seminar sessions are held monthly in the Assembly Hall of the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine (Kyiv, 9 Leontovycha Street). Participation in the seminar is also possible online. The seminar "doors" are open not only to scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and employees and students of Ukrainian higher education institutions but also to everyone interested.
The next seminar session is scheduled for April 2026.
Proposals for presentations (report abstracts of 1–2 pages) please send to the email addresses of the seminar leader – Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Muscle Biochemistry Department of this Institute, academician Serhiy Oleksiyovych Kosterin: kinet@biochem.kiev.ua; kosterin.serg@gmail.com.
Follow announcements of seminar sessions also on the website of the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine.
Video recordings of previous sessions are available on the Institute's YouTube channel.
