The Kharkiv Chemical Seminar and the Kharkiv Quantum Seminar are once again joining forces to advance science and invite everyone interested to a lecture by a prominent scientist in the field of materials chemistry – one of the most cited researchers in the world, Professor Maksym Kovalenko.
The joint session will take place on March 31, 2026, at 16:00 (Kyiv time) on the Zoom platform.
Lecturer: Professor Maksym Kovalenko (Prof. Maksym Kovalenko), professor at the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zürich), a leading expert in nanomaterials and quantum dots, a researcher in energy issues, and one of the most cited scientists in the world. He was born in Hola Prystan (Ukraine) and received his chemical education at Chernivtsi University.
Lecture topic: “Quantum light sources using colloidal quantum dots”.
Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) – the latest generation of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) – have dynamic, entropy-stabilized soft lattices and electron-friendly surfaces that do not affect their classical semiconductor optical properties. They are naturally bright emitters that do not require epitaxial shells with a wide bandgap. In recent years, LHP NCs have become the most intensively studied material for quantum dots, challenging fundamental paradigms of the field in almost every aspect. These are the first quantum dots to demonstrate exciton coherence on timescales comparable to their radiative lifetimes. The giant oscillator strength effect provides extremely fast emission (lifetime up to 60 ps) even in relatively large nanocrystals while maintaining single-photon emission. Periodic ensembles of LHP NC nanoparticles have also demonstrated collective accelerated radiative decay – superfluorescence – a phenomenon previously unobserved in colloidal systems. The fine exciton structure of LHP NC nanoparticles can be easily tuned by shape anisotropy. Additionally, thanks to simple near-field interaction with highly chiral plasmonic nanostructures, their emission, which would otherwise be linearly polarized, becomes fully chiral, making LHP NC nanoparticles the first fully chiral colloidal single-photon emitters. Beyond photophysics, LHP QDs have proven to be effective photocatalysts facilitating organic redox transformations inaccessible to conventional photocatalysts. The presentation will summarize the contribution of Maksym Kovalenko’s interdisciplinary team and international partners, whose names will be indicated in the presentation and accompanying notes.
