On June 3, 2026, Anatoly Zagorodny, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, President of the NAS of Ukraine, Viacheslav Bogdanov, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, First Vice-President of the NAS of Ukraine, Ihor Krivtsun, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Materials Science of the NAS of Ukraine, Director of the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the NAS of Ukraine, and Zinoviy Nazarchuk, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Western Scientific Center of the NAS of Ukraine and the MES of Ukraine, Director of the G.V. Karpenko Physico-Mechanical Institute of the NAS of Ukraine, made a working visit to the Ya.S. Pidstrygach Institute of Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics of the NAS of Ukraine
The visit began with a presentation of the Institute's activities. Roman Kushnir, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Director of the Institute, spoke about the main focus areas of the institution's work, human resources, the results of structural optimization, in particular, the completion of the integration of the Center for Mathematical Modeling into the Institute, and the publication activity of scientists as well. He noted that despite the difficult conditions of wartime, the Institute managed to maintain staff stability and continue to conduct fundamental and applied research. Special attention was paid to the work carried out in the interests of the rocket and space industry and within the framework of the Targeted Scientific and Technical Program of Defense Research of the NAS of Ukraine.
The Institute's scientists presented the results of research that have been implemented in the practice by the State Enterprise "M.K. Yangel Pivdenne Design Bureau". In particular, they discussed methodologies and algorithms for calculating the strength of thin-walled rocket structures, composite materials, rocket engine elements and solid fuel charges. These developments give the possibility to increase the efficiency of design and assessment of the modern rocket technology reliability. The development of the Institute's infrastructure was discussed separately. The Academy's management was made aware of the results of the solar power plant implementation with a capacity of 84.68 kW, which operates under the energy service model and provides part of the Institution's electricity needs, increasing its energy sustainability.
Volodymyr Pelykh, Corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, Deputy Director for Science of the Institute presented the main results of research in the field of mathematics. These included works on the theory of differential equations, mathematical physics, functional analysis, algebra, topology and graph theory. Among other matters, he spoke about the research in the field of relativistic mathematical physics, astrophysics and cosmology, and presented the results of international cooperation, in particular, Deputy Director informed about the Institute's participation in the activities of the International Consortium of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). He also spoke about the activities on the creation of the Mykhaylo Ostrohradsky Center for Advanced Mathematical Research and Education based on the Institute's Western Branch.
Yuriy Tokovy, Corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, Deputy Director for Science of the Institute reported the results of research in the field of mechanics and mathematical modeling. He emphasized that a characteristic feature of the Institute is the combination of fundamental theoretical research with the solution of applied problems. Focus areas of Institute’s research include the study of the strength and reliability of structures, mathematical modeling of complex technical systems, creation of new materials and technologies, study of processes in composite structures, metamaterials and low-dimensional systems. Some of the developments are aimed at increasing the state's defense capabilities and restoring damaged infrastructure.
In the course of the visit, the Academy top management got acquainted with the work of the Laboratory of Theoretical and Experimental Research of Nanomaterials of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Modeling of Low-Dimensional Systems. It is planned to create a Core Facility Center on the basis of the laboratory. The visitors saw the complex of modern equipment for studying the optical and luminescent properties of materials, and were made aware of plans for the development of computing infrastructure for high-performance calculations in the fields of astrophysics, magnetohydrodynamics, thermomechanics, and materials science.
Academicians of the NAS of Ukraine Viacheslav Bogdanov, Ihor Krivtsun and Zinoviy Nazarchuk took part in the discussion of the presented results. Summing up the visit, Anatoly Zagorodny, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, President of the NAS of Ukraine, noted the Institute's significant achievements in fundamental and applied research, the high level of scientific schools and the relevance of the work carried out. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of further strengthening the institution's human resources potential and attracting young researchers, primarily in mathematical areas.
