On May 14, 2026, an Open Day was held at the I.M. Frantsevich Institute for Problems of Materials Science of the NAS of Ukraine. The Institute was visited by students from the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute," Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, as well as representatives of industrial enterprises interested in modern materials and technologies.
The participants were welcomed by the Deputy Director of the Institute for Scientific Work, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Ostap Zgalat-Lozynskyi, and the Head of the International Relations Department, Doctor of Technical Sciences Marina Storozhenko. They emphasized the importance of materials science research for the innovative development of Ukraine, industry, medicine, energy, and defense capability, as well as the role of young specialists in creating new technological solutions.
The Head of the Institute's Young Scientists Council, Stepan Kyryliuk, presented an exhibition of developments by the I.M. Frantsevich IPMS. Among them were titanium alloys for aviation and medicine, high-strength ceramics for armor protection, composites with carbon and basalt fibers. The demonstration of testing special fabrics for cut resistance particularly interested the guests.
After the presentation of developments, participants visited laboratories for mechanical testing of materials, polymer-ceramic composites, electron microscopy, and 3D printing. The Institute's scientists showed how modern research equipment works and how laboratory developments can be transformed into practical technologies. Oksana Korniyenko demonstrated the capabilities of the Tescan Vega electron microscope and showed the microstructure of metals, composites, and biological objects. Yehor Brodnikovskyi spoke about the process of converting water into hydrogen and obtaining "clean" electricity. Serhii Ivanchenko presented nanocomposites for batteries and fuel cells. Ostap Zgalat-Lozynskyi and Vladyslav Naumenko introduced guests to additive manufacturing technologies for ceramic and composite parts, while Dmytro Verbilo demonstrated material strength testing.
The event concluded with informal communication among scientists, young researchers, students, and industry representatives. Participants discussed the prospects for the development of materials science, opportunities for cooperation, and the involvement of youth in scientific research.
