On May 15, 2026, a ceremonial meeting was held on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the G.V. Kurdyumov Institute of Metal Physics of the NAS of Ukraine.
Employees of the Institute, representatives of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine, heads of academic institutions, higher education institutions, scientific organizations, and enterprises of strategic industries took part in the event.
Opening the meeting, the Director of the Institute, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Valentyn Tatarenko, gave a report on the history of the establishment of the institution, its formation, and organizational changes that took place over eight decades. He also recalled the scientific schools founded by outstanding scientists – academicians G.V. Kurdyumov, V.I. Danilov, V.N. Grivnev, M.O. Kryvohlaz, V.V. Nemoshkalenko, A.P. Shpak – which defined the development of metal physics in Ukraine and continue to develop in the Institute's modern research.
Today, the scientific departments of the Institute work in four main directions: electronic structure and properties of metals and compounds based on them; atomic structure of metals and metal-containing heterophase structures; nanoscale and nanostructured systems; physics of strength and plasticity of metals and alloys.
Deputy directors, Doctors of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Heorhiy Firstov and Vyacheslav Lizunov, spoke about current research directions and the most important results obtained by the Institute's scientists.
Honorary Director of the Institute, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Orest Ivasyshyn, in his report focused on the place of metals in the modern world of advanced materials, artificial intelligence, and additive technologies, as well as on the prospects for the development of metal physics. Despite the rapid spread of new structural and functional materials, metals and alloys remain critically important for many industries – from industry and energy to medicine, transport, aerospace, and defense. That is why research in the physics of metals and metal-containing systems remains an important foundation for technological development, innovation capacity, and strengthening Ukraine’s defense capability.
Academician-Secretary of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Mykhailo Bondar, advisor to the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yaroslav Yatskiv, representatives of the apparatus of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine, as well as the Chair of the Scientific Committee of the National Council of Ukraine on Science and Technology Development, Oleksandra Antonyuk, congratulated the Institute’s team on the anniversary.
Congratulations were also extended by the heads of NAS of Ukraine institutes – the V.E. Lashkaryov Institute of Semiconductor Physics, the M.M. Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics, the I.M. Frantsevich Institute for Problems of Materials Science, as well as representatives of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute," the National Transport University, and the State Enterprise "Zaporizhzhia Machine-Building Design Bureau 'Progress' named after academician O.H. Ivchenko."
Participants of the meeting emphasized that the G.V. Kurdyumov Institute of Metal Physics of the NAS of Ukraine has combined fundamental research with the practical needs of industry for 80 years. Its long-standing cooperation with enterprises of strategic industries – in researching, creating, and improving technologies for manufacturing and processing pure metals and alloys – is of special importance for the innovative development of the country.
The anniversary meeting was an opportunity not only to recall the history of one of the leading academic institutions in the field of metal physics but also to outline its current role as a scientific center working for technological resilience, industrial development, and the future of Ukraine.
