The O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding hosting a scientific conference with international participation.

On May 27–28, 2026, the annual All-Ukrainian conference with international participation “Chemistry, Physics and Surface Technology” dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Institute’s founding was held at the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry (ISC) of the NAS of Ukraine in Kyiv. 

The organizers of the conference were the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, the Scientific Council "Chemistry and Technology of Surface Modification", the Interdisciplinary scientific and technical complex "Surface Chemistry" of the NAS of Ukraine.

The conference focused on the following problematics: theory of chemical structure and reactivity of the surface of solids; physical chemistry of surface and interphase phenomena; chemistry, physics and technology of nanomaterials; medical, biological and biochemical aspects of the study of nanomaterials.

The conference was held in a mixed online and offline mode, with 246 presentations submitted by representatives of 10 countries (Ukraine, Great Britain, Georgia, Spain, Italy, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, USA, Uzbekistan). Ukrainian and foreign scientists also presented research conducted in collaboration with colleagues from Great Britain, Spain, Italy, China, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, USA, Uzbekistan, France, Switzerland, Sweden.

Scholars from 37 research institutions of the NAS of Ukraine, 2 national branch academies of sciences, professors and students from 31 higher education institutions and colleges of Ukraine and 37 foreign universities, as well as employees of Enamin LLC (Kyiv), Farmak LLC (Kyiv), Nanotechcenter LLC (Kyiv), International Research Center for Advanced Functional Materials (Kyiv), Nanostructured Materials and Technologies (International Research Center NANO, Kyiv), ECORESORS LLC (Baranivka), Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies LLC (Kyiv) participated in the conference.

Volodymyr Turov, Corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, Director of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine opened the conference. He welcomed the participants, wished them fruitful work, and also focused on the 40th anniversary of the Institute's founding. The speaker spoke about the history of the institution's foundation and presented its modern structure. He emphasized that Academician O.O. Chuiko is the founder of the Ukrainian scientific school of chemistry, physics and surface technology of highly dispersed oxides, known far beyond Ukraine, as well as the founder of the Institute. Then, the participants watched a film, which presented vivid fragments of the 40-year history of the Institute.

In total, 34 viva-voce reports were heard at seven sectional meetings: 15 in online and 19 in offline mode.

 The scientific program of the conference began with a speech by Petro Horbyk, Corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, Deputy Director for Science, Head of the Nanomaterials Department of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine (section No. 1, chaired by Volodymyr Turov, Corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine). He noted that the Institute took an active part in the elimination of the consequences of the Chernobyl man-triggered disaster: a total of 28 employees were involved in this work. The speaker spoke about the institution's developments in this focus area. He also reported that representatives of the Institute participated in the conference "Chernobyl Disaster: Medical, Environmental and Social Consequences 40 Years Later". He touched upon the aspects of creating a wide range of new multifunctional nanostructured dual-purpose materials, in particular for special technical, medical and technological applications in martial law conditions. 

A report by Professor Volodymyr Hunko, Head of the Department of Amorphous and Structurally Ordered Oxides of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine was also presented at the section. The report was devoted to the study of the behavior patterns of pyrogenic metal oxides and metalloids, as well as their complex interaction with proteins and motile Proteus mirabilis bacteria in various environments.

Presentations of scientific research at section No. 2 (chaired by Oksana Linnik, DSc in Chemistry, Senior researcher, Head of the Department of Surface Photonics of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS,) were made by Arseniy Yevtushenko, DSc in Physics and Mathematics, Head of the Department of Physics and Technology of Photoelectronic and Magnetosensitive Materials of the I.M. Frantsevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science of the NAS of Ukraine (report “The Effect of Thermal Annealing on the Structural and Photocatalytic Properties of Magnetron-Sputtered Cu-Al-O Films”); Lina Sartynska, PhD in Engineering, Senior researcher of the said Department (report "Electrochemical Behavior of BN-Me (Ti, Cr, Al, Zr) Nanocomposites Synthesized under the Concentrated Light, with Suppressed Surface Influence"); Diana Vistorska, PhD student at the Institute of Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences, Vilnius University (report "New data on high-entropy garnets based on yttrium-aluminum garnet (YAG)"); Alvard Timonina, PhD student at the Institute of Chemistry of Functional Materials, State Scientific Institution "Institute for Single Crystals" of the NAS of Ukraine (report "Floating perlite/TiO₂/Ag composites as effective photocatalysts for the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from water"); and Anastasiia Kramar, PhD student at the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine (report "Structural features, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic properties of iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) films modified with zinc").

 Reports on the development and application of nanomaterials in medicine were heard and discussed at section No. 3, chaired by Pavlo Kuzema, PhD in Chemistry, Senior research fellow at the laboratory "Core Facility Center "Mass Spectroscopy and Liquid Chromatography" of the Department of Biomedical Surface Problems of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine. The results of the research were presented by Vladyslav Vivcharenko, PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Medical University of Lublin (Poland) (report "Plasma-treated polysaccharide-based biomaterial as a potential carrier of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species"); Veronika Poltavets, PhD in Chemistry, Associate Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Chemistry of Dnipro State Medical University (report "High-precision electrochemical microfluidic platform based on nanostructured MnO₂ for sensitive determination of the quantitative content of hydrogen peroxide in biological fluids"); Paulina Kazimierczak, PhD in Pharmacy, Associate Professor at the Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine of the Medical University of Lublin (Poland) (report "Bifunctional implant based on the zeolite-chitosan-bisphosphonate complex for the treatment of osteoporotic fractures"); Yevgen Dikhtiaruk, PhD student of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine (report "Biomedical aspects of nanocomposites based on macroporous chitosan/PVA cryogels"); Oleksandr Maliuk, PhD student of the O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine (report "Kinetic patterns of the action of calix[4]arene C-956 on Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺-ATPhase activity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum and contractile activity of the aorta"); and Marta Trzaszkowska, PhD student of the Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at the Medical University of Lublin (Poland) (report “Endemic propolis as a functional component of wound dressings: targeted screening for selective anti-melanoma activity”).

The discussion of the scientific progress on medical topics of the conference continued at section No. 4 (chaired by Andriy Datsiuk, PhD in Chemistry, Senior research fellow, Deputy Director of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine).

The first speaker was Alina Lytvynenko, PhD in Biology, researcher from the O.O. Bohomolets Institute of Physiology of the NAS of Ukraine; she spoke about the effect of gold nanoparticles on the cells of the follicular environment of oocytes. Next, Dmytro Kunytsky, a PhD student at the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the NAS of Ukraine, spoke about polymer membranes based on polysaccharides and silver nanoparticles. The report of Eva Komashchenko, a student at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, dedicated to the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of antibacterial properties of new biomedical composites, aroused a lively interest.

Representatives of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine continued with the practical application of developments: Iryna Siora, PhD in Chemistry, outlined the analysis and prospects for the development of the enterosorbent market in Ukraine, and Viktoria Payentko, PhD in Chemistry (Poland) presented a report “Mechanochemical synthesis of organo-mineral composites: adsorption, electrokinetic properties and biotesting”.

Section No. 5, headed by Olga Kazakova, PhD in Chemistry, Senior researcher at the Department of Amorphous and Structurally Ordered Oxides of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, was dedicated to theoretical and experimental achievements in the study of nanoobjects.

Oleksandr Semchuk, DSc in Physics and Mathematics, Head of the Department of Physics and Chemistry of Nanosystems of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, presented the report on the contribution of excitons to energy transfer processes inside nanotubes.

Serhiy Pokutniy, DSc in Physics and Mathematics, Research fellow at the same Department presented the results of research on strong optical absorption in atom-like nanosystems.

The audience was greatly attracted by the speeches of young scientists. Mykhailo Varvarin, a PhD student at Kyiv Academic University and a researcher at the G.V. Kurdyumov Institute for Metal Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, introduced the audience to a first-principle study of the evolution of the electronic structure and the decrease in the work function in two-layer graphene intercalated with alkali metals (the research was carried out jointly with the University of Zurich). His colleague, PhD student Vitaliy Lebed, analyzed in detail the synthesis and study of disordered graphene-based films intercalated with rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs). Kyiv Academic University PhD student Oleksandra Sukhanevych presented the results of modeling femtosecond laser ablation in Ti-6Al-4V alloy from local heating to surface roughness parameters.

Roman Sukhanevych, a PhD student at Kyiv Academic University and an employer of the G.V. Kurdyumov Institute for Metal Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, in the final report detailed the issues of the interaction of electromagnetic waves with metamaterials based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and carbon nanotubes, in particular the role of the geometry and multi-walled structure of the latter (the study was conducted in collaboration with the O.Ya. Usykov Institute for Radiophysics and Electronics of the NAS of Ukraine and the Leibniz Institute for Solid State Research and Materials Science in Dresden).

Section No. 6, chaired by Mykola Borysenko, PhD in Chemistry, Head of the laboratory of oxide nanocomposites of the Department of composite materials of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, was devoted to theoretical and experimental achievements in the field of catalysis. The reports were made by Oleksiy Zhokh, PhD in Chemistry, Research fellow at the Department of heterogeneous catalysis and chemical kinetics of the L.V. Pysarzhevsky Institute of Physical Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine ("Macrokinetic approach to discrimination of kinetic models in heterogeneous catalysis") and Mykhailo Kurmach, PhD in Chemistry, Research fellow at the Department of Porous Substances and Materials (report "Catalytic properties of hierarchical Sn-BEA zeolites in the process of obtaining methyl lactate from glucose"); Oleksiy Zinchenko, PhD student of the Institute of Sorption and Endoecology Problems of the NAS of Ukraine (report "Development of a process for obtaining lactide by condensation of alkyl lactates under reduced pressure"); and Mykyta Lupan, PhD student of the Institute of Scintillation Materials of the NAS of Ukraine (report "Morphology and control of pro-oxidant behavior in cerium oxide nanoparticles induced by doping").

The work of section No. 7 chaired by Nadiia Roik, PhD in Chemistry, Senior researcher at the Nanomaterials Department of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, was focused on the analysis of adsorption processes and sorption properties of new materials.

Yevgen Duhopelnikov, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Senior research fellow at the Department of Biological Physics of the O.Ya. Usykov Institute for Radiophysics and Electronics of the NAS of Ukraine (Kharkiv), analyzed ligand-nanoparticle interactions using spectrophotometric analysis. Stanislav Serhiychuk, a PhD student, who represented the V.E. Lashkaryov Institute of Semiconductor Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, spoke about the development of SERS substrates based on the silver mirror reaction for detecting organic molecules at low concentrations. The issue of purifying aqueous solutions from Ce(IV) and Eu(III) ions using sorbents modified with phosphorylated tetrahydroxycalixarenes was outlined in detail by Volodymyr Sirous, a PhD student of the Institute of Chemistry of Functional Materials of the State Scientific Institution “Institute for Single Crystals”. The issues of synthesis, microstructure, and microwave properties of Cu-substituted Ni–Zn ferrites were covered by Vladyslav Kukhar, a PhD student of the V.I. Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine. Anatoliy Zaporozhets, a PhD student of Uzhhorod National University, shared the results of his study of changes in the surface of silicates under the synergistic influence of chemical agents and ionizing radiation. Roman Brodsky, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Senior research fellow at the Department of Condensed Matter Theory of the Institute for Single Crystals of the NAS of Ukraine, presented a report "Effects of a finite amount of solution in sorption processes".

A total of 34 viva-voce reports were delivered and over 120 poster presentations were discussed during the conference.

The best reports of scientists were awarded with diplomas. Volodymyr Turov, Corresponding member of the NAS of Ukraine, the Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the conference, and Iryna Laguta, PhD in Chemistry, Head of the laboratory "Core Facility Center "Mass Spectroscopy and Liquid Chromatography" of the Department of Biomedical Surface Problems of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine and the Scientific secretary of the conference, recognized the most interesting reports on behalf of the Scientific Committee of the conference.

Yevhen Dikhtiaruk, a PhD student of the O.O. Chuiko Institute of Surface Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, Vladyslav Kukhar, a PhD student of the V.I. Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, and Eva Komashchenko, a student of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv received awards for viva-voce reports.

Serhiy Kulieshov and Yuliia Shlapa, PhDs in Chemistry, Senior research fellows of the V.I. Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, and Dmytro Zayets, a student of the Faculty of Physics of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, received awards for poster presentations.

Articles based on the materials of the submitted reports, will be reviewed and published in the journal "Chemistry, Physics and Surface Technology" or the collection "Surface".
