Chemistry for medicine, industry, and environmental protection. The Academy's leadership visited the F.D. Ovcharenko Institute of Biocolloid Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine

30.03.2026

March 27, 2026 The President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Anatoliy Zahorodniy, together with the First Vice-President of the NAS of Ukraine, Chairman of the Section of Physical-Technical and Mathematical Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Vyacheslav Bohdanov, Vice-President of the NAS of Ukraine, Chairman of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Radchenko, academician-secretary of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Petro Stryzhak, scientific secretary of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Biological Sciences Yevheniy Rutyan, and scientific secretary of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Biological Sciences Oksana Dzyuba visited the F.D. Ovcharenko Institute of Biocolloid Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine on a working visit.

The F.D. Ovcharenko Institute of Biocolloid Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine is a leading Ukrainian scientific institution conducting fundamental and applied research in the fields of biocolloid, colloid chemistry, and colloid-chemical materials science. The Institute carries out systematic comprehensive studies of natural and synthetic dispersed systems and materials; principles, methods, and technologies for their use in industry; biotechnology for the enrichment of mineral raw materials and environmental protection; macrokinetics, fractal properties, and physico-chemical mechanics of natural and technogenic dispersed systems. The Institute pays great attention to research in a new technological direction – colloidal biotechnology, which ensures highly efficient enrichment of metal-containing mineral raw materials of various origins, extraction of precious and non-ferrous metals, detoxification of wastewater and natural waters contaminated with heavy metals and radionuclides, purification of soils and bottom sediments from toxic substances and radioactive contamination, and more. An important place in the Institute’s work is occupied by research on modern nanoscale systems and functional materials for medicine, including veterinary medicine, as well as in restorative therapy, including the creation of new therapeutic, implantable, and diagnostic systems and materials, sensors, and biosensors. The scientific direction of studying the mechanisms and patterns of nanostructure formation with controlled particle orientation and their positioning on surfaces, developing synthesis methods for new types of stable soft colloidal systems, and investigating their properties is practically important for creating conductors and photonic crystals, among others.

During the visit, the Academy’s leadership familiarized themselves with the scientific infrastructure of the institution, its personnel potential, modern developments, and innovative projects. Special attention was paid to issues of developing international cooperation, expanding the material and technical base, supporting scientific teams, and involving young scientists in the implementation of the Institute’s research projects.

The delegation from the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine also toured the Institute’s scientific laboratories, where methods are being developed for creating new biocompatible hybrid hydrogels for medical and agrotechnological purposes based on natural and synthetic polymers and minerals with enhanced biocompatibility and improved physico-chemical properties; interactions of ultradispersed mineral particles with biological systems of various organizational levels are studied; synthesis and characterization of metal nanoparticles are carried out, as well as assessment of the potential risk of nanomaterials’ impact on humans and the environment, and their biological safety.

Communication between the delegation members and the Institute’s young scientists showed that rejuvenation of the scientific staff is one of the institution’s priorities.

Following the visit, the participants discussed prospects for modernizing the Institute’s experimental base, expanding its international cooperation, and supporting young scientists. The delegation members noted that the F.D. Ovcharenko Institute of Biocolloid Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine is a key institution where fundamental and applied research is of great importance for the sustainable development of our society.
