Kharkiv Quantum Seminar invites everyone to the next lecture - the final one of this academic year, which will take place on June 23, 2026 at 4:00 PM in an online format.

Lecturer: Adam Miranowicz, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland and RIKEN, Wako, Japan 

Subject of the lecture: Toward Next-Generation Quantum Technologies with Squeezed Light and Schrödinger Cat States

Abstract: Squeezed light states are a powerful resource for quantum technologies. Among their most famous applications are the enhancement of the sensitivity of gravitational wave detectors, as demonstrated in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo experiments, and the demonstration of quantum computational superiority using boson sampling with squeezed light in experiments by teams from Hefei and the Xanadu–NIST consortium. Moreover, quantum technologies based on the Schrödinger's cat states are of considerable theoretical and experimental interest, especially in the context of quantum computing.

Professor Adam Miranowicz plans to discuss new applications of squeezing in resonators for exponentially enhancing the interaction between light and matter, allowing for a transition from the strong interaction regime to the ultrastrong and deep interaction regimes, and for exponentially improving the readout of the qubit state as well. These new approaches were mainly developed theoretically at RIKEN. The concept of enhancing light-matter interactions through squeezing has already been experimentally validated in the work of the NIST team (Burd et al., Nature Physics, 2021) and the Sorbonne team (Villiers et al., PRX Quantum, 2024). Furthermore, the speaker will review research methods based on Kerr nonlinearity for generating multicomponent states similar to Schrödinger's cat states, and new protocols for implementing geometric quantum gates based on cat qubits as well.

About the lecturer: Professor Adam Miranowicz is a quantum physicist at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. He completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford and held postdoctoral positions at RIKEN and several Japanese universities. His research focuses on quantum optics and quantum information. He has worked as an expert-examiner for the European Commission, in particular in the ERC Advanced Grants competitions, and for the National Science Center of Poland. Since 1998, he maintains extensive scientific cooperation with Japanese research institutions within the Monbusho, JSPS and JST programs. According to Web of Science, he is among the 2% of the most cited scientists in the world. His awards include the Polish-German Heisig Prize, the Rubinowicz Prize of the Polish Physical Society, and the Polish Prime Minister's Prize for Scientific Achievement.
