
On March 27, 2026, the Vice President of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Volodymyr Radchenko, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Petro Stryzhak, Scientific Secretary of the Section of Chemical and Biological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Biological Sciences Yevheniy Rutyan, and Scientific Secretary of the Department of Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Biological Sciences Oksan Dziuba, paid a working visit to the Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine.
The history of the Institute dates back to 1918, when the first president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Academician Volodymyr Vernadsky, founded a chemical laboratory in Kyiv. Over time, the name of the academic institution, its structure, and composition changed, but the scientific direction of its research remained unchanged – the creation of scientific foundations for knowledge-intensive resource-saving processes for the synthesis of new functional materials and the reduction of technogenic pressure on the environment, as bequeathed by the founder of the Institute, Volodymyr Ivanovych Vernadsky.
The Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine is a leading Ukrainian scientific institution conducting fundamental and applied research in the fields of heterogeneous coordination chemistry, physical-inorganic chemistry, electrochemistry and physical chemistry of molten, liquid and solid electrolyte and electrode systems, solid-state chemistry, and methods of metal raw material processing. The main scientific directions of the Institute's activities are:
- new knowledge-intensive functional inorganic substances, materials, coatings;
- electrochemistry of molten, liquid, solid electrolyte and electrode systems;
- heterogeneous coordination chemistry;
- ecological and "economic" circulation of metal-containing substances.
The Institute carries out systematic comprehensive studies related to methods for synthesizing new functional materials for electrochemical devices and processes, electrocatalytic nanomaterials, catalysts, energy storage materials, optical materials, ionic liquid crystals and their hybrid composites, carbon materials, quantum dots, and more. Considerable attention is paid to enhancing the targeted implementation of applied scientific research, the results of which are promising for practical application and the execution of innovative projects.
An important place in the Institute's work is occupied by research on the creation of highly efficient, environmentally safe, energy- and resource-saving technologies incorporating secondary raw materials into the production process, which will contribute to reducing technogenic impact on the environment.
During the visit, the Academy's leadership familiarized themselves with the scientific infrastructure of the institution, its modern developments, and innovative projects. Special attention was given to issues of developing international cooperation, expanding the material and technical base, supporting scientific teams, and involving young scientists in the execution of the Institute's research projects.
Members of the delegation were introduced to the work of collective use centers – the Collective Use Center for Scientific Equipment "Monocrystal Diffractometer System SMART APEX II with CCD Detector" and the Collective Use Center "X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS/ESCA)".
The Institute's leadership presented the delegation with the structure of the institution, its personnel potential, and current research directions.
Great attention during the visit was paid to the scientific laboratories of the Institute. In particular, the guests were introduced to laboratory rooms where methods for synthesizing and studying new oxide functional materials are developed, which form the basis of the element base for modern communication, energy accumulation and storage systems, as well as coordination compounds for creating new substrates for medical and technical purposes, and more.
Members of the delegation communicated with young scientists and graduate students of the Institute, noting that the institution pays special attention to rejuvenating its scientific staff.
Following the visit, the participants discussed prospects for modernizing the experimental base, expanding international cooperation, and supporting young scientists. Delegation members noted that the Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine is a key institution where fundamental and applied research is of great importance for the sustainable development of our society.
