On June 3, 2026, the G.V. Karpenko Physico-Mechanical Institute of the NAS of Ukraine - one of the leading research institutions of Ukraine in the field of physicochemical mechanics of materials, structural strength, corrosion, hydrogen materials science, and technical diagnostics, celebrated its 75th anniversary.
On the occasion of the anniversary, a solemn meeting of the Academic Council was held at the Institute; Zinovy Nazarchuk, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine, Director of the institution opened it. He emphasized that the history of the Physico-Mechanical Institute is an example of a successful combination of fundamental research and applied developments focused on the needs of energy, mechanical engineering, transport, aerospace, defense, and medicine.
Today, the Institute has 10 scientific departments and a research laboratory. The main research is focused on two priority areas: physicochemical mechanics of fracture and strength of materials, as well as physical foundations and information technologies of technical diagnostics and remote sensing.
In recent years, researchers of the Institute have achieved a number of significant results in the areas of corrosion resistance and durability of materials, surface hardening of metals and alloys, creation of new protective coatings, and increasing the reliability of energy equipment. Significant progress has also been achieved in the field of non-destructive testing and technical diagnostics, in particular in the development of new methods for detecting pipeline defects, diagnosing the condition of structural materials, and developing modern vibration diagnostic systems.
An important area of Institute’s activity is the training of scientific personnel. Over the years of PhMI existence, its employees have defended more than 100 doctoral and 660 PhD theses. Currently, the institution employs 37 young researchers and specialists, and 21 PhD students study full-time here.
The Institute is the founder and publisher of the professional scientific publications "Physical and Chemical Mechanics of Materials" and "Information Selection and Processing". Over the past fifteen years, its scientists have published over 3.900 scientific papers, including almost a thousand articles in foreign professional publications.

During the event, the Institute's staff was awarded honorary distinctions.
After the ceremonial part, the opening of a new corrosion-mechanical laboratory took place. The laboratory is equipped with modern scientific equipment for studying the processes of corrosion, tribocorrosion and corrosion-mechanical destruction of materials in highly aggressive environments at elevated temperatures and pressures.
The new laboratory will operate on the basis of the Department of Corrosion and Anti-Corrosion Protection of the Institute. It is a unique research complex for Ukraine, which allows studying the impact of hydrogen sulfide environments on materials and equipment of the gas and oil industries. Its activities are aimed at solving the urgent problems of increasing the reliability and durability of industrial facilities that are of strategic importance for the country's economy.
