The Director of the Ivan Franko Institute of the NAS of Ukraine (Lviv), academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yevhen Nakhlik, received the highest award of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv – the Ivan Franko Medal – "for the development of Ukrainian literary studies and cooperation with Lviv University".
The award ceremony took place on March 9, 2026, in the assembly hall of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv during the Solemn Academy on the occasion of the 212th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko.
Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yevhen Nakhlik spoke at the opening of this esteemed gathering with a Word about Taras Shevchenko "Multifacetedness, inexhaustibility, and relevance of the Genius", emphasizing the multifaceted and integral figure of Kobzar and the inexhaustibility of his creative heritage, as well as its exceptional significance for the formation of the national consciousness of Ukrainians. The scholar spoke about the combination of national and universal dimensions in Shevchenko's works, the artist's exacting demands on his own people and his uncompromising stance against imperial enslavement, the idea of freedom as one of the highest values in Taras Shevchenko's worldview, and the existential motives of his poetry.
After the speech, the rector of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Roman Hladyshyevskyi, presented the NAS academician Yevhen Nakhlik with the medal and in his award speech emphasized Yevhen Nakhlik’s significant contribution – a graduate of Lviv University – to the development of Ukrainian humanitarian science.
In his thank-you speech, academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yevhen Nakhlik recalled his teachers and classmates and expressed gratitude to university colleagues for long-term scientific cooperation, which began in 1991 when the Lviv branch of the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the NAS of Ukraine was established, and especially since the transformation of this branch into the separate academic Ivan Franko Institute in 2011.
